Theatre Talk: What's coming up

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal

Special to The Village News

With the season cracking open here is what's coming up.

Shows I'll be reviewing soon include "The Yellow House," the world-premiere about Vincent van Gogh's visit to Paris in 1886, opening Nov. 24 at La Jolla Playhouse. Perhaps now we'll know why there is a flying goat in "Starry Nights." For tickets, visit lajollaplayhouse.org. Don't forget to arrive at the Osler parking structure to catch the shuttle up to the theatre.

At the Roustabouts Theatre, opening Nov. 18, is "For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls" performed on stage at the Moxie Theater at 6613 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. Closing Dec. 4, tickets can be acquired by calling 619-568-5800 or at http://www.theroustabouts.org/southernbelle. Also be on the lookout for "Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge," an upcoming reading.

New Village Arts in Carlsbad is opening with the west coast premiere of "1222 Oceanfront, A Black Christmas," Nov. 28 through Dec. 26. For tickets, call 760-433-3245 or visit nva.org.

"She the People" is a Second City production opening at San Diego Repertory on the downtown Lyceum stage Nov. 18 and running through Dec. 5. Get your tickets at http://www.SDRep.org.

Join me at The Welk Theatre in Escondido Wednesday, Dec. 1 for "Hard Day's Night." The Beatles tribute starts playing Nov. 24, and runs Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Tickets are at http://www.sandiegotickets.welkresorts.com or call the resort box office, 760-749-3000.

Diversionary Theatre is bringing the West Coast premiere of "Azul" to their stage Nov. 18 through Dec. 19. It's about a Cuban woman's memories of her life before leaving her homeland. For tickets, call 619-220-0097 or visit http://www.diversionarytheatre.org.

The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park is set to run Dr. Seuss's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas'' from now until Dec. 31 interspersed with evening performances of "Ebenezer Scrooge's BIG San Diego Christmas Show." For more information about what is coming or running, go to http://www.theoldglobe.org.

Broadway San Diego is in the middle of "Hairspray" until Nov. 21 followed by "My Fair Lady," Nov. 30 to Dec. 5 at the downtown Civic auditorium. They promise an exciting season for 2022 that you won't want to miss. Tickets at http://www.BroadwaySD.com.

Of course, what would Christmas be without Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"? It will open at The Cygnet Theatre in Old Town Nov. 23 and close Dec. 26. Get your tickets by calling 619-337-1525 or visit cygnettheatre.org.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for an excuse to see the decorations at The Del, why not snag tickets to Lamb's Theater at 1142 Orange Avenue and catch their version of "A Christmas Carol" while visiting Coronado Island. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.lambsplayers.org or by calling 619-437-6000.

Meanwhile, the civil war dramedy "Ben Butler" is still playing at North Coast Rep. until Nov. 21 followed by the not to be missed "Always Patsy Cline" on Dec. 8. Get your tickets; they sell out fast for this wonderful show, at http://www.northcoastrep.org.

Moonlight Stage is going indoors for the first time to their AVO Playhouse Dec. 3-23 with "Miracle on 34th Street, A Musical Radio Play." It is bound to add to the holiday spirit. Book early for the best seats at moonlightstage.org.

And finally, it appears San Diego Musical Theatre is dark until their first show in February 2022. Visit SDMT.org for details about their upcoming season.
