Pets of the Month wait to be adopted at Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary

As February ends, the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary continues to adopt and foster out pets to loving homes. Last month's pet, Opal, was placed into long-term foster care – but there are plenty more that need loving homes. The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary offers free monthly pet microchipping and spay/neutering clinics at Fallbrook Fertilizer, Feed & Farm Supply, 215 W. Fallbrook St., and will be at Bark in the Park on March 19.

The first pet in the spotlight this month is Maya. Around a year old, she's from Tijuana and has already had her first litter of puppies. Her calm nature is perfect for families with small children, and she'd love to join your family when going to events. Not one to overreact, she loves attention and would be perfect for younger children to play with. With her calm temperament, she'd also be perfect in a home with cats or other dogs to play with.

The next featured pet is Twyla. At 6 years old, this Chiweenie – part Chihuahua, part Weiner dog – loves to be held. From Tijuana, she's up to date on her medical records and is perfect for a family where someone is always home so she can lay in their lap. While not high energy, she loves people and gets along with everyone.

The next pets in the spotlight are a bonded pair, brothers Ari and Andrew. These 8 year old boys love to hang out together, though have very different personalities. Ari, the "alpha cat," loves toys, is more active, and is very vocal. On the other hand, Andrew enjoys his alone time more and is more likely to be found napping with Ari. These older cats must be adopted together, and are perfect for adults who enjoy quiet, as Andrew needs quiet time away from loud noises. Although they may take a while to warm up to you, these cats are incredibly friendly once they do and will not leave your side.

The last pet in the spotlight is Meadow. Less than a year old, this puppy loves to play and be active! From Tijuana, she's perfect for an active family that loves hikes, long walks, and runs. A great fit for a family looking for a second dog, or who wants to adopt a pair. Meadow needs someone home with her all day, especially if you like your furniture intact – however, once she gets her energy out, she calms down and loves the attention children can give her. "She comes out the gate like a racehorse," an animal sanctuary volunteer said. Meadow is the perfect dog for a family with active children, as both them and her will get their energy out by playing.

The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary would like to remind everyone to take into account the reality of pet owning before adopting a certain breed of animal into their life. A new movie, "Dog," which was released earlier this month, has already impacted the amount of Belgian Malinois being released into shelters. Research dog breeds before you adopt – the Belgian Malinois, for example, is an incredibly smart working dog – meaning, in order for them to live a healthy life, they must have a job and extensive training. These dogs are normally used for military and police K-9 units, and most people do not have the time or training ability needed to handle these dogs safely and give them a good home. The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary does not accept Belgian Malinois for this reason – to return this breed, send them to a malinois specific rescue.
