Local P.E.O. chapter supports graduate student with International Peace Scholarship

FALLBROOK – P.E.O., Chapter WM of Fallbrook recently raised $500 that, along with contributions from several other California P.E.O. Chapters, provides scholarship funds through the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund. These funds are supporting a young woman from South America who is pursuing a PhD at a University of California campus in Northern California.

The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund is a fund established in 1948 to provide scholarships for women from other countries for graduate study in the U.S. or Canada. Students who receive this scholarship are required to return to their home country when their studies are complete.

In addition to providing financial support, the members of Chapter WM also send care packages and notes of encouragement to their student to help enrich her graduate degree experience while she is so far away from home and family. The members of Chapter WM plan to continue supporting IPS as part of the mission of their organization – to promote educational opportunities for women, about which they are very passionate.

In 2021, the IPS Board of Trustees awarded $1,800,600 to 163 recipients from 63 different countries. During the 2021-2022 academic year, these exceptional women will be studying toward graduate degrees at 93 different colleges and universities in 32 states and four Canadian provinces. Excluding current awards, IPS has paid scholarships to 6,549 women from 178 different countries, totaling over $43.5 million since 1949.

These extraordinary IPS recipients leave their home countries with hopes and dreams and with plans to return home with advanced degrees. These degrees will enable them to help foster peace through education by taking leadership roles in business, conflict resolution, education, economic and environmental development, epidemiology, engineering, health care, international development, journalism, law, psychology, public administration, sociology, technology, arts and sciences.

P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization) is an international nonprofit organization that has been helping women reach for the stars for more than 150 years.
