SACRA/PROFANA brings a rich tapestry of American choral music to Fallbrook

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Music Society closes its 44th Season in spectacular fashion Sunday, March 27 with an "Americana" vocal performance that will leave the audience wanting to "hit the road." Since its debut in 2009, SACRA/PROFANA, San Diego's only year-round professional choral group, has risen to become San Diego's most eclectic, performance vocalists, and is considered to be "San Diego's go-to choral ensemble."

Fallbrook's unique program, entitled "American Landscapes," is about the specific places and geographies of this great country – the places that capture the imagination and illuminate the world around one. SACRA/PROFANA will take concertgoers on a riveting journey to the places and landscapes that are the very fabric of this great nation. "We are delighted to have SACRA/PROFANA back by popular demand," said Bob Freaney, president of Fallbrook Music Society.

"Although this is their fourth appearance with us, their upcoming patriotic program is unlike anything we have ever presented," Freaney added. During the pandemic, Americans gained a new appreciation for the iconic American landscape. This program features pieces inspired by places like the Sierra Nevada and Devils Tower National Monument, along with some new selections, as well as some familiar works, such as Shenandoah and America the Beautiful.

Under Juan Carlos Acosta, artistic director, the group continues its artistic excellence and commitment to contemporary choral music, while diversifying its repertoire, representation and engaging in socially relevant issues. Over a career that is approaching 20 years, Acosta has been active nationally, regionally, and locally as speaker, presenter, and clinician for such groups as the Choristers Guild, the American Guild of Organists, and the California and American Choral Directors Association.

SACRA/PROFANA has had some remarkable achievements in just 12 years including numerous world and U.S. premieres and collaborations with leading regional arts organizations: San Diego Symphony, Art of Élan, San Diego Opera, and the California Ballet. The group has also performed with many artists of worldwide renown, including the legendary Irish band the Chieftains, producer Carlton Cuse (of ABC's hit show "Lost"), composer Michael Giacchino (Star Trek), and composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz in the development of Disney theatrical's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" at La Jolla Playhouse.

This performance is free to the public, and will take place in Fallbrook's historic Mission Theater, 231 North Main Ave., Sunday, March 27, at 2 p.m. Auditorium doors open at 1:30 p.m. Seating is general admission and no tickets are required. Donations are always welcome to help support the music society's tradition of delivering excellence in live music and youth music education programs to Fallbrook and its surrounding communities.
