Not only did Fallbrook High School’s boys swim team win the Warriors’ 2022 season opener March 4 at home against La Costa Canyon, but the Warriors won all 11 of the swimming events.

“It’s a great way to start the season against a team that typically is very strong,” Richardson said.

Last year, the closure of the Fallbrook High School pool limited off-season practice. The pool has been open since the conclusion of last year’s swim season. “You could really see the difference,” Richardson said. “It was fun to kind of be back to what we’re used to.”

This year, Richardson has 24 boys, including one diver. (La Costa Canyon did not have a diver; if only one school has a diver the diving is not part of the team score although the diver competes for CIF qualifying purposes.) Approximately six of those will swim in junior varsity competition. “Most of the boys are swimming varsity,” Richardson said.

The final score of the March 4 meet was 116-50. Fallbrook took first, second, and third against La Costa Canyon in the 100-yard freestyle event. Brock Bushnell had a winning time of 50.66 seconds; Kai Maestas completed his laps in 52.68 seconds, and freshman Alex Gabos finished in 56.98 seconds. Bushnell and Maestas posted consideration times for the CIF meet.

Bushnell also won the 50-yard freestyle with a CIF meet automatic qualifying time of 22.66 seconds. Doug Pearce and Carson Vance also both won each of their individual events. Pearce had an automatic time of 2:06.06 in the 200-yard individual medley and a consideration time of 57.11 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. Vance posted consideration times in both of his events, completing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.40 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.56.

Maestas won the 100-yard breaststroke with an automatic qualifying time of 1:03.94. Ian Ritchie took first place in the 100-yard backstroke and had a consideration time of 59.61 seconds.

The Warriors took both first and second in both freestyle relays while posting automatic times for both. Pearce, Maestas, Ritchie, and Bushnell won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:34.43 while Brayden Bender, Tegan Cannon, Jeremy Nelson, and Kenneth Fukunaga finished in 1:43.37.

The 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Pearce, Ritchie, Vance, and Bushnell completed their race in 3:31.43 while Sam Goode, Nelson, Cannon, and Gabos had a time of 3:49.60. The winning 200-yard medley relay team of Fukunaga, Gabos, Cannon, and Nelson had a consideration time of 1:56.26.
