New library exhibit to feature art quilts

FALLBROOK – "Material Magic: The Art Quilt," a spectacular art textile exhibition, opening May 9, is hosted by the Friends of the Fallbrook Library and is a must see.

This show exposes viewers to the range of imagination, inventiveness and processes that art quilters go through to create their works. Abstracting and stretching the imagination leaves the viewer in awe of this special art form.

Lori Anderson, Charlotte Bird, Marilyn Chaffee, Viviana Lombrozo, Kathleen McCabe and Noreen Ring are the six award-winning artists exhibiting in the community room. These wonderfully creative, innovative artists know their material (fiber and fabrics), stitching their expertise together to make a magical show.

Anderson works with home-dyed fabrics using multiple techniques. She said, "I prefer to work in the abstract, capturing mood and the essence of an image." Chaffee uses both commercial and hand-dyed fabric and layers them with machine stitching. McCabe is fascinated by the play of light and shadow and uses fabric and thread and sometimes pencil to create this illusion in her pieces.

"What if?" is the approach Bird brings to her work which often begins with a central motif that reminds her of microscopic forms. "Doubts, Desires, Dreams" is one of a series by Lombrozo. In her art quilt, she "imagines every piece in an archeological museum that together represents whoever created the artifacts." Ring invites viewers to her work stating her "intention to create worlds the viewer can visit, stay a while and find a sense of comfort there, so much they will want to visit often."

Hallway Gallery Quilts by Fallbrook Quilt Guild members Carol Carpenter, Karen Johnston and Ann Turley share an explosion of color and the fabrics and stitches used in endless and surprising possibilities. All three quilters focus on the elements of fine art and proudly represent the guild.

On the patio, the sculptures of Marilyn Rudoff will amuse and delight viewers with her colorful and whimsical, imaginary pieces that are hand built from ceramic clay with an underglaze.

Meet the artists Friday, June 3 from 4-7 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to all. The show runs through July 1. New Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday 12-7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sundays. The library is located at 124 S. Mission Road.
