Golden wins two Don Diego college scholarships

SAN DIEGO – Among the 18 stellar San Diego County students sharing $55,000 in highly competitive, 2022 Don Diego Scholarship Foundation college scholarships is Madilyn (Madi) Golden of Fallbrook, who won Don Diego's $4,500 Tulloch Family Junior Livestock Auction Scholarship and $1,500 Roxana Foxx FFA Scholarship.

Golden will use her $6,000 in awards to obtain a B.S. in animal science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, then transfer to UC Davis and earn her doctorate of veterinary medicine.

Golden said, "My aspiration is to become a private practice livestock veterinarian specializing in equine medicine. I've always loved animals, and I know that working with livestock and horses will fit perfectly into my life."

In fact, it already does. While achieving a 4.35 GPA, participating in varsity gymnastics and being active in a plethora of clubs at Fallbrook High School – in addition to serving as Miss Fallbrook First Princess – Golden works at a local veterinary hospital and devotes an enormous amount of time and effort to animal-related volunteer community service, including K-9 Guardians and REINS.

She reported, "I have spent numerous hours helping raise and train service dogs for veterans with PTSD and other military-related disabilities and providing therapeutic horse-riding lessons to disabled children and adults to strengthen their physical and mental abilities as well as their social skills."

An active member of the Fallbrook FFA, Golden has served as Greenhand Officer, Chapter Vice President and President. She has succeeded in FFA competitions and earned her Greenhand, Chapter and Golden State FFA degrees.

A well-rounded young adult with diverse interests, Golden awes and inspires those around her. One scholarship recommender heralded her as a "servant leader ... great asset and strong role model." Another lauded her as "an incredible force in our community ... who daily demonstrates enthusiasm, dedication, critical thinking and sheer kindness."

Golden said, "The Don Diego scholarships will allow me to reach new horizons in my education and the agriculture industry, while inspiring those around me and giving back to my community." Chair Juanita Hayes confirmed, "Madi Golden epitomizes the high caliber of student we are delighted to support."

The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation was named for Don Diego, AKA Tom Hernandez, who served as the San Diego County Fair's welcoming goodwill ambassador from 1947-1984. Since its inception in 1986, the foundation has awarded $1,276,844 in scholarships to 362 students and in agriculture education grants.
