Bob Fosse's 'Dancin'' dazzles Silvergate residents

FALLBROOK – An exhilarating celebration of Bob Fosse's iconic choreography was witnessed by nearly 60 local seniors on Wednesday, May 25, when a group of residents from Silvergate Fallbrook attended a community outing to see "Dancin,'" a raucous and lively adaptation of the famed dance man's hit Broadway musical.

"We're delighted that Silvergate chose The Old Globe as one of its springtime destinations," said Sam Abney, associate director of philanthropy for The Old Globe who spoke to the crowd about why The Old Globe is a San Diego treasure. "For seniors who want to get out and enjoy a spectacular production at the theater, Silvergate picked the ideal show because "Dancin'" features an eclectic score of musical genres and showcases an extraordinary cast of Broadway's most accomplished dancers. This production is the quintessential Broadway experience for Fosse fans and they've seen it in San Diego's finest theater."

Residents arrived at Balboa Park early for a catered luncheon in the Craig Noel Garden, the outdoor lower courtyard adjacent to the Old Globe, named for the founding director of The Globe. Opening remarks were given by Greg Petree, president of AmeriCare, the parent company of Silvergate senior living communities.

"We're proud to be here today with our residents to celebrate one of theater's greatest art forms...dance!" said Petree, who shared with the group that the musical number "Sing, Sing" was one of his favorite dance numbers in the show. "We strongly believe in supporting the arts and knew that our residents would be clamoring to see this wonderful show. This theater experience is just one example of the high-quality activity programming our communities continue to offer every year."

The afternoon was filled with laughing, cheering and exuberant clapping as residents and staff enjoyed each other's company while watching the dancers glide, stomp and pirouette across the stage. "What a terrific way to spend the day," said Paul Breen, who has attended many of Silvergate's events in the past as a guest, and is considering the idea of a future move to Silvergate. "This was a fabulous event and the whole day, from the lunch to the production to the bus ride home was just wonderful."

The senior living community's activities team continually dreams up a long list of creative and unique trips for residents that they might not do on their own. "We are always thrilled to take residents out to these high-profile events," said Carie Hensley, activities director for Silvergate Fallbrook. "Our philosophy is that independent living comes from a truly active lifestyle filled with plenty of fun and exciting things to do and going places you probably wouldn't go while you're living at home alone. Here at Silvergate, the toughest choice is simply which events to say, 'yes' to."

Next up on Silvergate's event line-up are a June outing to the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in San Clemente, a tour of the Monserate Winery in Fallbrook in July, and a trip to the Escondido Performing Arts Center in August.

With new activities showing up on the calendar every month, visitors are welcome to tour the community and pick up a sample activities calendar to check out all of the upcoming events at Silvergate Fallbrook. The community is now scheduling virtual and private in-person tours of its apartment homes and beautiful retirement campus.
