Seldom does a 17-year-old high school senior stir up a community in the live-entertainment business as Mason Jopes of Bonsall High School is currently causing. On demand in several local venues, the young country singer, musician, and songwriter has an entourage of fans from a wide age group, who loyally pack his concerts.

"I think the music was in me when I came out of the womb," claimed Jopes. "At age 2, I had a little snare drum and cymbal that I banged on continuously. At 5 1/2 my parents Jeff and Shauna Jopes bought me a drum set and I began taking lessons at the urging of my birth father Bob Nicewander, who played drums for Willie Nelson and Johnny Paycheck. He is my inspiration to succeed in the music business. and appears with me on stage at some of my concerts. Although I am adopted, my parents encourage our relationship."

"Mason is proficient on drums. piano, banjo, pedal steel guitar, electric and acoustic guitars," according to Nicewander.

"When did your vocalizing begin?" I asked.

"When in the fifth grade, about to go to middle school, there came an announcement for all interested in show choir to go to an audition. It might have been the most important decision of my life. There were multiple levels in the choir for middle school and I was able to land the best one for a sixth grader. I also appeared in many programs at the Mission Theatre with CAST," Jopes responded.

"When was the songwriting initiated?"

"It began with the COVID-19 lock-down restrictions between my sophomore and junior year. I found I could express myself by putting my thoughts into music and came out with a bunch of good songs. I plan to keep writing many more. I am recording one of them on July 28 which will be released soon after," he continued.

"What else is in the near future for Mason Jopes?"

"I'll be attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where I'll be majoring in theatre and music videos while performing in local venues."

"Where do you see this career taking you?"

"I do not see any limits in my career, only progress," the polite, tall, and personable young man concluded.

Mason Jopes is scheduled to appear at Casa Estrella, 3757 South Mission Ave. on Sunday, June 5 beginning at 3 p.m.
