Warrior girls have top three pole vault heights at league meet

Fallbrook High School athletes had the three highest girls pole vault clearances at the Valley League track and field meet May 6 at Valley Center High School.

The winning height of 12’0” was obtained by senior Rose Wagner, sophomore Maya Khoury had the second-place distance of 10’6”, and sophomore Sahara Khoury was third at 9’0”.

“That was a real joy to see all three girls perform that well at league,” said Fallbrook assistant coach for pole vault Jim Curran.

“It was great,” Wagner said. “It was super fun vaulting at Valley Center.”

The fourth-place pole vaulter, Valley Center freshman Grace Hawranik, achieved a height of 7’6”.

This year, Fallbrook only had three girls participating in the pole vault. Last year the Warriors took the top four positions with Wagner winning at 10’6”, Sahara Khoury and Savannah Riley both clearing 9’6” with Khoury being awarded second based on missed attempts at lower heights, and Maya Khoury having the fourth-place height of 9’0”.

“We went in with great confidence that we could do it again,” Curran said of taking the top three positions.

“We’ve developed this culture,” said Fallbrook head coach Marco Arias.

“It was really a tribute to Rose and her motivating girls to go out and do better,” Curran said.

That leadership may have impacts for the 2023 Warriors when Wagner will be on the University of Massachusetts track and field team. “The twins are going to be a real force next year,” Curran said.

The coronavirus outbreak cancelled the 2020 season after one meet, so there was no league championship. Wagner did not participate in track and field as a freshman, so she won league championships in both of her league meets.

“Fabulous performance,” Curran said.

Fallbrook had five runners in the girls 1,600-meter race and all finished in the top 10. Mission Hills junior Anne Tedrow had the winning time of 5:32.87 while Fallbrook sophomore Abby Petersen was second at 5:40.27. The final high school race for senior Maddy Gaul took her 6:08.33, which gave her sixth place. A personal record of 6:12.60 was worth seventh place for junior Jade Boltinghouse. The ninth-place time of 6:19.95 was achieved by sophomore Avery Lynas while freshman Cynthia Mills took 10th place with a 6:24.29 performance.

Petersen finished fourth in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:33.67. The seventh-place finisher, sophomore Cassandra Rivero, completed her laps in 2:46.29. Boltinghouse was ninth at 2:48.77. Lynas finished in 2:54.18 for 10th place. Fallbrook’s other girls 800-meter runner, senior Julia Rossi, finished 13th with a time of 2:56.45.

The other Fallbrook senior girl at the league meet, Maylyn DeLeon, had the 13th-place discus throw of 68’3” and the 15th-place shot put distance of 19’8”.

Fallbrook had one girl in the 3,200-meter run; freshman Lucia Mochel took fourth place with a time of 13:08.13. The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Lacy Fabry, Petersen, junior Kelsey Rossi, and junior Hailey Reed finished fourth after completing their race in 4:26.02.

Fabry finished the 400-meter race in 1:03.07 for fifth place, and sophomore Jasmine Uresti had the 10th-place time of 1:05.29. The only Fallbrook runner to finish in the top 10 for the 200-meter dash, sophomore Brittany Fabry, posted a time of 27.62 seconds and was seventh. Brittany Fabry was ninth in the 100-meter dash which took her 13.62 seconds.
