BONSALL – In December 2021, the Bonsall Education Foundation gave the Questers Live Oak Chapter a tour of the Bonsall Schoolhouse. Shortly thereafter, BEF learned that the schoolhouse had been selected as the Questers' project of the year for 2022.
Questers was founded in 1944 by Jessie Elizabeth Bardens to help boost morale for a public that was weary of war. It is a nonprofit whose mission is to support the preservation and restoration of memorials, historic buildings and landmarks. One of the ways they do this, is by purchasing period pieces for a site.
The premier historic period for the Bonsall Schoolhouse is 1895-1919. Questers worked diligently to attain items from before or around that period through their personal donations or through sites like Craigslist or eBay. Often when they told sellers the reason for the purchase, they would donate the item in full or at a discounted price.
The items procured for the Schoolhouse include a teacher's desk and chair; a grandfather's chair; a 1912 flag with 48 stars, stand and topper; presidential portraits of Washington and Lincoln; a dictionary stand, chair and dictionary; an oak side table; a wall clock; two depression glass inkwells; two eagle book ends; a hand bell; a Seventh Reader; two student desks; and curtains.
The Bonsall Education Foundation is grateful for the members of Questers International, Live Oak Chapter and their dedication to making Bonsall Schoolhouse an historic example of its period.
