Bonsall High School's boys soccer team was in jeopardy of a winless season prior to Feb. 2 when a home game against O'Farrell Charter followed the Senior Night recognition ceremony. A 4-2 win over the Falcons gave Bonsall what would be the Legionnaires' only win during the 2022-23 season.

"Outstanding team performance. Everybody played to their top. They applied everything we had talked about in practice," said Bonsall coach Ennis Pipe. "A true team effort."

Bonsall took a 1-0 lead on an own goal, but an O'Farrell goal later in the first half created a 1-1 score which held through the halftime whistle. Bonsall then scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.

The first goal of the second half was scored by Braylen Hoye. A goal by Eddy Nicolas gave Bonsall a 3-1 lead. "The ball bounced around and he was in the right place," Pipe said.

Jabez Rios scored the fourth Bonsall goal. "I felt it was an amazing goal," Rios said.

An O'Farrell score narrowed the deficit, but Bonsall held on for the victory after the Legionnaires began the season with 14 consecutive losses.

Nicolas, who played center back and forward, was one of the Bonsall seniors honored Feb. 2. Roman Ibarra, who played center back, was the other senior on the team.

Bonsall and O'Farrell were both in the Patriot League. The teams had played Jan. 17 at O'Farrell, and the Falcons won that game by a 4‑1 margin.

The Legionnaires concluded their season with league games in the East County backcountry on consecutive days. A Feb. 6 trip to Mountain Empire was a 3-1 Redhawks win. Bonsall's season concluded Feb. 7 with a game at Joan MacQueen Middle School in Alpine, where Liberty Charter home games are played. The Lions were on the preferred end of the 5-0 final score.

"Today was fatigue. We played last night and the boys were tired," Pipe said.

The loss to Liberty Charter finalized Bonsall's season record at 1‑16, including 1-9 in Patriot League play. "It was a tough season, but the boys have played with heart all season long," Pipe said. "Good group of boys."
