Volunteers start the Fallbrook Village Literacy Project

FALLBROOK – The Rotary Club of Fallbrook Village initiates several humanitarian and intercultural projects in Fallbrook every year. One of these services, the Fallbrook Village Literacy Project, is a volunteer-driven project that addresses the root causes of illiteracy. Illiteracy rates in Fallbrook are at a critical high-point – especially in the underserved and economically disadvantaged families.

Being illiterate involves much more than just not being able to read and write.

What's at stake? A person's economic, intellectual and emotional growth can be irreparably harmed by being illiterate – which also frequently inhibits one's ability to lead a fulfilling and successful adult life.

Recently, The Rotary Club of Fallbrook Village was the recipient of 60,000 children's books that feature living skills – a gift from a local children's publisher. While this is an important gift for its Fallbrook Village Literacy Project, the Rotary project involves more than just giving children free books to read on their own.

A vital component in the project is the volunteer mentoring program that focuses on helping children acquire living skills. A volunteer mentor will be trained to interact with children by reading age-appropriate, living skills books – a process that bonds the mentor with those children.

It takes a village (mentors, parents, teachers, and the community) to help a child become literate. Anyone who would like to become a mentor or support the Fallbrook Village Literacy Project can email [email protected].
