FYR teams finish season at tournament

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Youth Rugby finished its 18th season of winter 15s rugby serving Fallbrook and Bonsall boys and girls. In an amazing winter season, FYR sent three teams to the end of season tournament in San Juan Capistrano this year.

On March 11, the young men and women fought with heart and soul and proudly represented Fallbrook. The u8 flag rugby team tied one game and won two games. The u10 team lost the first and won the second two. The u12 team made it to the finals and came in second in the u12 novice division.

It was a brutal day of rugby in the rain, mud, and puddles, but the kids showed true grit and tenacity and wrapped up the day with penguin-sliding through the puddles and covering themselves in mud or medals.

FYR appreciates the work of all the coaches, volunteers, and parents and the time and effort they put into these kids as well as for braving the very cold and rainy practices. This is not a sport for the faint of heart.

FYR hosted two home games this season at Potter Junior High, a season opener and one at the end of season. This could not be accomplished without facilities managers and personnel that have helped FYR to continue operating its program. Fallbrook Equipment Rentals played a major role by donating large light banks so that practice could be held in the evenings.

FYR President Deah DeVries said, "We give a huge thank you to the following FYR sponsors and supporters, Legacy Endowment Community Foundation, Jersey Mike's, Mountain Mike's, Winchell's Donut House and Ahrend Studios for photography."

If any local children are looking for a sport to get involved with this summer, there will be a rugby summer season. Registration will open in April, exact date to be announced. The season practices begin in the middle of May and games start June 3 and finish with the Cal State games on July 15.

During the summer season, rugby is played in a 7v7 player format called Summer 7s. For more information and updates, visit https://fallbrookrugby.org/ or go on Facebook at Fallbrook Youth Rugby. Anyone interested in rugby can also email FYR at [email protected].
