Intervention specialist added to job of Vivian Banks Charter School principal

The job description and functions of the Vivian Banks Charter School principal have been modified.

A 4-0 Bonsall Unified School District board vote April 17, with Michael Gaddis absent, approved the new job description in which the principal will also be an intervention specialist.

“This is going to leverage that position,” said BUSD superintendent Joseph Clevenger.

Vivian Banks Charter School had a 2021-22 enrollment of 92 students. “It’s a very small school and we have a full-time principal,” Clevenger said.

“The principal does have time to get in the classroom,” Clevenger said. “We’re leveraging that ability for the principal to get in and work with specific kids.”

The principal will provide literacy and math intervention to students. The schedule of intervention will be developed by the principal in conjunction with the school district’s Executive Director of Educational Services. They will work together to create a schedule of daily and extensive intervention in which the principal will serve as the intervention specialist and work with multiple grade levels for targeted intervention in math and literacy.

The principal and intervention specialist will also work with other principals and district personnel in developing and managing programs, materials, and activities of the school district including the formulation of district policies for board approval.

He or she will be in communication with both school staff and district administration and will interpret district policies and administrative regulations, define and clarify educational objectives, and stimulate high levels of job performance. He or she is a member of the school district’s management team and will participate in district projects as assigned.

In his or her role as the intervention specialist, the principal will provide individual or small group instruction to students who are struggling academically in math and literacy, support differentiating curriculum in order to target specific learning goals, develop strong connections with students and families through consistent and positive communication, and work closely and actively as a member of a team.

The one-on-one instruction may be either in an on-site or an on-line format. Standards-based growth data will be collected and will be analyzed to implement subsequent intervention sessions.
