In November, the Bonsall Unified School District board approved a new collective bargaining agreement with the Bonsall Teachers Association. The April 17 BUSD board meeting included approval of a “side letter” increasing teacher pay for summer school and the Extended School Year special education program.

The 4-0 board vote, with Michael Gaddis absent, increases the hourly pay for summer school and Extended School Year teachers from $40 to $55. An estimated 20 teachers will receive that extra pay for their 7 1/2-hour days.

“Summer support is one of the most effective things we can do to improve student outcomes,” said BUSD superintendent Joseph Clevenger. “We want our staff to work through the summer as much as possible, and one way to do this is increasing the hourly rates.”

The collective bargaining agreement approved by the BUSD board Nov. 16 included a 6.5% raise for the teachers from the 2021-22 salary schedule along with an additional 1% off-schedule salary increase.

The increase as well as the rest of the collective bargaining agreement was for the 2022-23 school year, and the agreement also created an advisory committee which will explore and create a mutually agreeable salary schedule for 2023-24 which will be brought back to the district and BTA bargaining teams.

The side letter is a single-year agreement only and is effective for the 2023 summer school and Extended School Year session although the summer increase may be part of future collective bargaining agreements.
