The Escondido Invitational track and field meet was held April 21 at Escondido High School, and Fallbrook High School junior Sammy Carmona won the boys high jump.

Carmona had a height of 6’1”. Four other boys cleared that height. A high jumper or pole vaulter has three chances to clear each height and misses at that height or at lower heights are used as the tiebreaker.

“Sammy’s having an incredible season,” said Fallbrook head coach Marco Arias.

The high jump win at the Escondido Invitational was Carmona’s eighth in nine meets this year including dual meets, and in seven of those his height was 6’0” or higher. Carmona cleared 6’4” at the April 15 Jaguar Invitational meet.

Carmona has also won the triple jump at four dual meets and has finished no lower than third; he did not participate in that event at the Escondido Invitational. Carmona had a long jump of 17’11” April 21 to place 24th among the 44 boys who contested that event.

Carmona did not participate in track and field last year. “This is really his true first track season, and he’s amazing,” Arias said.

The jumpers at the CIF San Diego Section finals with the three best heights from the three divisions combined qualify for the state meet. Last year, the third-place jumper cleared 6’6”. Arias believes that Carmona can qualify for this year’s state meet. “We’re looking for him to go 6’6”,” Arias said.

Vista High School junior Jordan Kondo cleared 14’0” to win the boys pole vault, but Fallbrook junior Aiden Bernier took second place with a height of 13’6” and Fallbrook junior Damien Votaw was eighth at 11’6”. “They did very well,” said Fallbrook pole vault coach Jim Curran.

The meet was the 10th of the season for Bernier, and he cleared at least 13’6” in nine of them. He set a personal record of 14’0” March 23 in the dual meet at Mission Hills. Votaw’s Escondido Invitational height was a personal record.

In both the boys 110-meter hurdles and the boys 300-meter hurdles, senior Drew Tegt took third place. He had times of 16.30 seconds in the 110-meter race and 43.23 seconds in the 300-meter event.

“He had a very good running race,” Arias said.

Fallbrook did not contest the boys 4x400 relay April 21, but Tegt is part of the Warriors’ normal quartet which took first place in five of the Warriors’ first six dual meets. An athlete can compete in up to four events at a meet and, in the April 19 dual meet at home against Valley Center, Tegt had the winning time of 54.36 seconds in the 400-meter run.

Girls lacrosse and girls track and field are both spring sports, and junior Shea Morgan participates in both. “It’s just amazing that she’s still able to compete at such a high level,” Arias said.

A time of 12.83 seconds in the 100-meter dash gave Morgan fourth at the Escondido Invitational. “She just continues to impress me,” Arias said.

Another Fallbrook junior, Jasmine Uresti, was fourth in the girls 400-meter race with a time of 1:02.23. “She just loves to race. She loves to compete,” Arias said.

This year, Uresti has also competed in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay. “There’s nothing she’s not willing to do,” Arias said.

Fallbrook didn’t run the 4x100 relay on April 21. The 4x400 relay quartet of junior Lacy Fabry, senior Hailey Reed, Uresti and junior Abby Petersen finished fifth with a time of 4:15.36. “Our 4x4 team is doing pretty well,” Arias said.

The Warriors won five of the six 4x400 relays at the dual meets preceding the Escondido Invitational. The April 21 time was the best of the season for Fallbrook.

Petersen also ran the 1,600-meter and 800-meter races at the Escondido Invitational. Her 1,600-meter time of 5:36.84 was worth eighth place. She had the 15th-best time among girls 800-meter runners at 2:31.28.

“It was a good meet,” Arias said.

Dual meets give five points for the winner of each event, three points for second place in individual events, and one point for third in each event. Fallbrook’s only win during the Warriors’ first four Valley League dual meets occurred April 13 at Escondido when both the boys and the girls had superior scores than the Cougars.

Arias noted that the Warriors have not been competitive in the throwing events for either girls or boys. “We’re not able to overcome those 18 points,” he said.

Fallbrook has scored some boys shot put and boys discus points; senior Abraham Hughes has provided the Warriors with second place and third place points in both events while sophomore Wyatt Casillas was promoted to the varsity after junior varsity wins in both non-league meets and earned seven varsity shot put points and one varsity discus point in the Warriors’ first four league competitions.

Fallbrook’s only girls thrower, senior Mira Walton, won both throwing events at Escondido and gave the Warriors four other position points at league meets through April 19.
