As of 5:13 PM on Friday, July 1, 2005 there is a fire burning on Camp Pendleton and approximately 300 acres have been affected so far. No structures have been destroyed.
According to Chief Bob Johnson, of Camp Pendleton the fire started at approximately 10:30 AM on the southwest side of the base, in the area known as Isadora Flats. Typically used as training area, the official name for the region is Local Range #401. The fire is well east of the housing areas, and no homes are currently in danger.
Chief Johnson was unable to give a timeframe for containment but he reported that there are currently six engines and 27 firefighters, including three chiefs in the area. County copter #2 is also on the scene. The firefighters are using backfires and volume breaks to fight the fire.
