Ethan Thouvenell shared the win in the Steer Wrestling event at the PRCA Championship Rodeo Jan. 29-30 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Thouvenell and Jake Johnson split first and second place after each brought their steers to the ground in 4.6 seconds. Each received a payout of $914.
“I was just happy to win what I won,” Thouvenell said of sharing the win. “I wasn’t sure what was going to happen.”
Thouvenell, who splits time between Menifee and Fallbrook when he is not on the rodeo circuit, has been traveling with Oregon cowboys Alex Robertson and Sean Santucci. The three traveled from Texas to Denver and then stayed at the Pueblo, Colorado, home of National Finals Rodeo qualifier Josh Peek before making the trip to Lincoln. “None of us had been to Lincoln before,” Thouvenell said.
“It was definitely an experience,” Thouvenell said. “It was absolutely the smallest arena I’ve ever been in.”
Thouvenell competed in the Jan. 29 evening performance. “It was cold,” he said.
Mosbrucker Rodeos was the stock contractor at Lincoln, but Thouvenell had never previously bulldogged at a rodeo with Mosbrucker animals. “I didn’t have time to see what steer I’d drawn or anything,” Thouvenell said.
Thouvenell rode Bomber, who belongs to Bonsall cowboy Russell Solberg, at Lincoln. Robertson served as Thouvenell’s hazer.
Thouvenell had the top time of the performance and led the rodeo when he left Lincoln, but Johnson equaled that time the following day.
