  • One woman’s honest opinion on healthcare

    Updated Jul 3, 2017

Healthcare has been a divisive issue these days, but why? Why is it a partisan issue when men, women and children from both sides of the political divide will be affected? It’s frightening on so many levels that a small group of Senate Republican men worked in secret to take accessibility to healthcare away from men, women and children who have preexisting conditions. For example, my three year old grandson was born with a rare genetic brain disorder call Joubert’s Syndrome. He needs constant monitoring of his liver and kidne...

  • The People's Right to Recall

    Updated Jun 26, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) The two-thirds super-majority held by Democrats in Sacramento has allowed them to pass the largest gasoline tax increase in state history, which has proven to be extremely unpopular. Recent polls suggest that 58 percent of registered voters disapprove. Efforts are now underway to eliminate the Democrat two-thirds super-majority by recalling one Senator from office. Another petition gathering effort is also underway to repeal the tax. Recall elections have been an integral part of the...

  • Re: Ballerinas make their way to theatre [Village News, 6/15/17]

    Updated Jun 26, 2017

In a time where every day seems to bring new horrors, when every ugly headline or divisive Oval Office pronouncement makes one want to take a shower in the (vain) hope of washing off the sleaze, there appears a light in the murk, and that light is on page B-4 of yesterday's Village News. The photo of the line of little ballerinas crossing Main Avenue was so incredibly lovely it brought tears to my eyes, and also the realization that there is, after all, good in the world. Thank you photographer Dan Cannizzo for capturing...

  • Labels divide and incite

    Updated Jun 26, 2017

The language in our public life is dark and ultimately dangerous. Rather than debate or debunk an argument on its factual merits, the routine more often than not reverts to ad hominem remarks, defamation and reliance for suasion on labels. Labeling is not a counter argument on merits. And labeling only aids in polarization. Polarization fogs up the course of constructive action and can incite extreme, even deadly, action by "true believers." In addition, "top cover" provided by the political and propaganda classes only...

  • Re: FRHD sale of hospital to mental health provider causes stir [Village News, 6/1/17]

    Updated Jun 17, 2017

I am commenting on the sale of the former Fallbrook Hospital to the Crestwood Behavioral Health. Crestwood plans to operate a mental health facility at this site. I understand that some in the community have concerns about the patients and how things will operate. Patricia Blum describes, in my opinion, the very reasonable precautions that will be taken in some of the facilities’ operation. While living in Sacramento, we had a mental health facility adjacent to our neighborhood. Some of our neighbors voiced concerns about t...

  • Re: Independent investigation needed into collusion with Russia [Village News letter, 5/18/17]

    Updated Jun 17, 2017

Despite opinions to the contrary, the fact of Russian hacking of Democratic National Committee computers during the 2016 Presidential campaign was validated by DHS and DNI, as follows: A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence states: "The US Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations…". "These thefts and d...

  • Local merchants can save us money

    Updated Jun 17, 2017

Today, I was reminded once again what a Fallbrook jewel Joe's Hardware is! So many times, the expert folks there have found us just the right part or product for our needs; and given us the best advice. This time, my pump sprayer broke, and if I’d gone to a big box store, I would’ve ended up buying a new one for $125. But the Joe’s employee found just the right bolt to fix mine. But I bought the wrong length, and when I went back, he remembered me, which bolt I’d bought and went right to the bin to get me the correct one. My...

  • A thank you to Fire Chief Stephen Abbott

    Updated Jun 17, 2017

Chief Abbot, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude for the kindness, professionalism and medical skill of paramedic Montana and his entire EMT team from Station Four. They promptly came to our house on Friday evening, June 2, to transport me to the hospital for severe dehydration. My husband and I were, of course, distraught, and the care and reassurance the paramedics showed was so very comforting. I’m sure our area appreciates what an excellent, dedicated emergency team we have in Station Four, as well as in the oth...

  • GEAR UP, an education success story

    Updated Jun 17, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) As the mother of a high school student, education has always been one of my top concerns. That’s why I’m so encouraged by "GEAR UP" – Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, a program that has helped almost one million low-income students in 48 states, the District of Colombia, and several U.S. territories. In this region, Palomar College’s GEAR UP program served 6,877 students in six high schools in 2016, including Escondido, and San Marcos. The program...

  • Hospital sale should be stopped

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

When I purchased my house in Fallbrook, its relative location to the Fallbrook hospital was a selling point. The idea that my house is now close to a "secure" mental health facility, that will house patients from multiple counties, probably isn't. The idea that the board rammed this through without a vote is also disconcerting. Whether this sale amounts to 50% of the healthcare assets or not, this should not have happened without the community's input and authorization. I doubt that the community's input would have been...

  • Open letter to Bonsall School District

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

What a great neighbor you have become! You erected an ugly four strand barbed wire fence on the property line between my property and the proposed new Bonsall school site. You also put an ugly No Trespassing sign on one of the strands of barbed wire facing my house. Since the fence is installed directly on the property line, it must conform to the Sycamore Ranch Declaration of Restrictions for fencing (copy was attached). I talked with Carlos Rodriguez (Bonsall School Maintenance). I told him that there was not a fence on the...

  • Food pantry appreciates fund raising support

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

Kicking off the 2017 Memorial Day weekend at the Pala Mesa Golf Resort, the 3rd annual Murphy & Murphy Charity Golf Tournament benefited the Fallbrook Food Pantry. Golfers and sponsors from all across Southern California participated. This year businesses and individuals sponsored 28 Marines to a day of golf and dinner. We hope to have even a higher number of Marine sponsorships for next year's golf tournament, which again will be held the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. There were 80 golfers in all and we had 26 tee...

  • AAUW thanks community

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

Once again, we’d like to thank the Village News for the fine coverage given to the Fallbrook branch of the American Association of University Women for our annual Country Garden Tour of Fallbrook. Each year, the funds raised go to scholarships for graduating young women of Fallbrook High School and also to send junior high students to Tech Trek, a science-oriented, weeklong camp held at University of California San Diego. We also give thanks to Major Market for contributing bottled water, for displaying our banner and for s...

  • Re: Independent investigation needed into collusion with Russia [Village News letter, 5/18/17]

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

For the past several months we've read and heard countless times from major media and various officials that the recent presidential election was hacked (or influenced) by Russia. Not a single detail on how this was done is ever mentioned. Those media should be super-ashamed for repeating ad nauseam an allegation without providing one iota of backing. One can go around repeating “The sky is falling” and this is what those media have gotten to sound like, losing any shred of respect and credibility they might still have had...

  • Healthcare is costly, never free

    Updated Jun 9, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) $400 billion dollars is the projected cost of a new government run healthcare plan proposed in Sacramento. That is twice the state's budget! Costing around $22,000 for every employed person in California – that's a massive new tax to pay for “free” healthcare for all! Senate Bill 562, by Senator Ricardo Lara (D – Bell Gardens), sets up a single payer plan for everyone living in California, including undocumented immigrants. It bans private health plans and creates a two-tier system:...

  • You want canine statesman?

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

So someone has come up with the idea of dog or dogs serving in the village political structure. This is not new and is way late and furthermore, the latest dog council overlooks the greatest dog candidate for Mayor ever. I'm speaking of Elvis, a great, friendly 145 pound Rottweiler, leader of the Bourbonnais pack. You could see him often in the sun in front of the former Primo Coffeehouse on Main drinking with friends. Elvis was disqualified from running for mayor in 2014 on account of his being unable to attend the many...

  • Beaucoup bouquets of roses to Fallbrook women golfers

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

Eighty-eight ladies wearing exotic hats and golfing attire arrived at the Golf Club of California’s “Where the Turf Meets the Rough” at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, in preparation for a shotgun gallop guest day. Cleverly divided into four flights with horse racing names, we were “Running for the Roses,” and what an amazing production it was. As a Fallbrook Niner myself, though now playing at Pala Mesa after our beloved old Gird Road course closed, I have to say this was the most impressive guest day I’ve ever attended. S...

  • Re: President Trump obstructed justice [Village News, 5/25/17]

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

Hilarious letter by Albert Wang. He cites "legal scholars" who wish to impeach Trump. His "legal scholars" are all left-wing supporters and contributors to Hillary's campaign. Actual legal scholars like Jonathon Turley and the left-of-center Alan Derschowitz and dozens of others have stated that there is NO grounds for impeachment. Mr. Wang and his left-wing ideology friends are delusional. He probably spends his days watching CNN and MSNBC. Rob Peterson...

  • Re: Anderson visits Fallbrook to talk about local issues [Village News, 5/25/2017]

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

The May 25 issue of the Village News reported State Senator Joel Anderson’s May 18 Fallbrook coffee. I was there, and was very disappointed in the very lengthy, canned responses that Senator Anderson launched into for each question. When he didn't have a canned answer, twice he responded, “I can resolve that if you make me governor,” then moved into what was apparently his closest stock response. I was offended when that was his response to a very thoughtful question from MajGen Anthony Jackson, USMC (Ret). Gen. Jacks...

  • BUSD asks for community input in superintendent search

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

BONSALL – The Governing Board of Trustees of the Bonsall Unified School District (BUSD) is in the process of gathering information as they prepare for the selection of a new superintendent. Dr. Justin Cunningham will be retiring at the end of July after serving the District since 2008. The board is eager to hear from BUSD parents and the Bonsall schools community about which personal and professional qualities are important to them in a superintendent, as well as the strengths of the district and any challenges the i...

  • Agriculture is vital

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) This week at the San Diego County Farm Bureau’s annual installation/awards celebration in Fallbrook, I was proud to recognize Gary Crouch, owner of Mountain Meadow Mushrooms, with an Assembly Resolution honoring him as "Farmer of the Year". Farming is vital to our state and local economies. California has long been the nation’s leading agricultural state, and locally grown crops including avocados, citrus, strawberries, olives, grapes and cut flowers have put San Diego in the top tier of...

  • Anxiety meds lead to broken hearts

    Updated Jun 2, 2017

I recently lost my granddaughter Alexis and have enclosed the following words from her father: "My friends...I don't know any other way to say this but to just say it. My beautiful, bright young daughter has passed away. For a few years now, Alexis has battled with chemical depression. Basically, a depression not based on events, environment or upbringing, but one based solely off genetics and a chemical imbalance that seemed to begin around puberty. At first it looked to be just normal teenage doldrums and angst. But she...

  • President Trump obstructed justice

    Updated May 26, 2017

If you believe that President Donald Trump should be impeached, you might want to sign up at Impeach Trump Now (impeachdonaldtrumpnow.org). More than 1.1 million Americans have signed the petition to impeach Trump. If you are not sure whether Trump should be impeached, you might want to visit Impeach Trump Now and read Professor Laurence Tribe's legal analysis. Professor Tribe of Harvard Law School is the foremost Constitutional law scholar in our country. Because I respect Prof. Tribe and Prof. Steven Shiffrin, I also...

  • Re: First canine mayor helps raise over $20,000 [Village News, 5/18/17]

    Updated May 26, 2017

As a dog lover, I really enjoyed the story about our local Fallbrook "Canine Council"; they look like a fine, intelligent, well-mannered group; handsome, as well. Here's a thought; as they've pawed their way into politics, perhaps we could send them to Washington in place of the many losers there now; they couldn't possibly do a worse job, and they could start at the very top; "Pariselle" has much better hair. Oh, wait; that probably wouldn't work as they're all trained to not poop where they eat. Georgiana...

  • VFW Welcome Home Party merits a Bravo Zulu

    Updated May 26, 2017

I am having difficulty putting into words my feelings with respect to the incredible “Welcome Home Party You Never Received” for Vietnam War veterans like myself this Saturday (May 20) at the VFW. Quoting from the program for this magnificent event: “You came home and sometimes were denigrated when you should have been celebrated.” That did not apply to me as a naval aviator participating in Operation Marketime but that certainly may have happened to many of the Vietnam vets there last night. In spite of having an overflo...
