Warrior football revs up; 180 try out for teams

Tryouts for Fallbrook High School’s varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams drew a total of 180 students during the first week of practice August 11-15.

“I’m happy about it,” said new head varsity coach Joe Silvey.

Silvey indicated that there would be no cuts from the squads. “As long as they come out and work with us, we’ll have them on the team,” he said. “We have to make sure we’ve got enough jerseys for everybody.”

The large turnout will likely minimize the need for most players to be on both offense and defense. The starting and second-team berths have not yet been determined.

“We’ve still got another week of practice and a week to get ready for our scrimmage,” Silvey said.

The annual Red and White Game will involve all three teams and will take place tomorrow evening (August 22) beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors will have a scrimmage August 29 at Orange Glen before opening the season at home September 5 against Murrieta Valley.

“The guys are working hard, competing,” Silvey said. “I’m pleased with their enthusiasm and looking forward to coaching them.”

The first week of practice saw some minor injuries. “Not too many, anyway,” Silvey said. “Some of them are just going to happen.”

“It’s gone well. We’ve had a good week,” he said after the first week of practice. “I hope we have as good a week next week as we did this week.”
