Fire safety tips for kids

As National Fire Prevention Week is October 5-11, now is an ideal time to talk to kids about how to avoid causing fires as well as how to keep safe should a fire occur.

The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) offers these tips. Children should:

1. Never touch matches, candles or lighters, and make sure to tell an adult immediately if they see matches or a lighter in a room.

2. Not cook alone.

3. Remind parents to turn pot handles toward the center of the stove.

4. Never stick anything in an electric socket.

5. Never hang anything on a lamp, heater or radiator.
