Warrior wrestling season starts off with a rumble

This past week was enormously challenging for the Fallbrook wrestling team. All the teams had a tournament, followed by their first home dual, a very exciting event!

On December 5 and 6, the freshman and sophomores participated in the Vista Frosh/Soph Dual Tournament.

At 140 lbs, Frankie Salazar and Jarrid Lewis placed third; at 152 lbs, Brandon Smith placed first (Brandon is a returning freshman county champion); at 215 lbs, Taylor Perry and Kyle Mericle placed third; at 275 lbs, Cristian Vera and Martin Vazquez placed second. These wrestlers are off to a great start.

On December 6, the girls had a tournament at El Camino. The team has two returning wrestlers, Andrea Gomez and Patty Diaz.

On the same day, the Varsity Carlsbad Tournament was held. Brett Jones, a returning state qualifier (119 lbs), and Jacob Albritton (140 lbs) placed first. Jacob Gandy (160 lbs), Richard Diaz (189 lbs) and John McDonald (285 lbs) placed fifth.

On December 11, the wrestlers had their first dual meet against El Camino – a home dual. This year, the team has implemented a new wrestling philosophy and made a push to get fans in the seats.

The efforts paid off. The meet was tremendously thrilling and there was a large crowd to cheer on the wrestlers. The gym was rumbling with excitement!

The junior varsity gave the spectators their money’s worth by eradicating El Camino with a final score of 51-30. The varsity won their meet with a final score of 42-41; it is the first time beating El Camino in a while.

Brett Jones (119 lbs), David Lopez (125 lbs), Johnathan Juarez (130 lbs), Jacob Albritton (140 lbs), Danny Garcia (145 lbs), Sean Foley (152 lbs) and Marco Salazar (160 lbs) all pinned their opponents.

All are invited to the team’s next home dual on Thursday, January 8. The team will be grappling against San Pasqual. Freshman/JV begins at 5:30 p.m. in the “Old Gym” and varsity starts at 7.

Although the school will have a two-week break, there is no break for the varsity wrestlers. They will be wrestling in Reno on December 19 and 20. This tournament is one of the toughest tournaments in the country! Wrestlers from almost every state will be represented there.

The team’s Discount Card fundraiser is still going on. For information on joining the boosters, becoming a team sponsor or purchasing Discount Cards, contact Bonnie Wagaman at (760) 473-5203.
