Please write on behalf of the kids

I would like to voice my concerns about the budget wrangling that has been going on in Sacramento and how it directly affects the quality of our children’s education.

I have four small children and three will be attending Fallbrook public schools in the fall. I understand that our governor and the state legislators have spoken of dropping funding for class-size reduction, the successful ballot measure saying kindergarten through third grade classes need to be held to 20 students per teacher.

Unfortunately, the consequence of this kind of shortsighted cut is less individualized attention for our youngest students. Instead of only 19 other children seeking for a teacher’s one-on-one help, 24 or 29 children will be doing it. This will result in less effective instruction.

Obviously, I acknowledge the troubles with our state budget. It is a very difficult one to resolve as state coffers come up shorter than usual. Nevertheless, our children take top priority. We cannot balance the budget on the backs of our children.

I urge all citizens to consider the impact this will have in Fallbrook and throughout the state. Please call, e-mail and write letters to our governor, the state senators and the state assembly members. Let them know you want them to maintain funding for class-size reduction in kindergarten through third grade. Thank you.
