Marine Corps mourns loss of Cpl. Pape, Pfc. Jones, and Cpl. Mozley

The United States Marine Corps mourns the loss of Corporal Ryan L. Pape. Pape was killed while conducting a night low-level static line parachute training jump here on Dec. 3. Ryan died as a result of injuries he received from the airborne exercise.

The incident is currently under investigation and all parachuting activities for 1st Reconnaissance Battalion have been suspended until the Naval Safety Center concludes their investigation.

Pape, a 23-year-old reconnaissance Marine from East Grand Forks, Minn., was assigned to Force Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Pape enlisted in the Marine Corps October 17, 2005.

His personal service awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Logistics Group mourns the loss of Pfc. Shirelle L. Jones, 27, who died Sunday evening, December 6, while on leave in her hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.

The cause of her death is currently under investigation by the Albuquerque Police Department.

Jones joined the Marine Corps Mar. 26, 2007 and was an ammunition technician for Ammunition Company, 1st Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st MLG.

Jones’ medals include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The 1st Marine Logistics Group mourns the death of fellow Marine Cpl. Richard Mozley of Mesa, Ariz., who died of complications from leukemia on Dec. 3. He was 23 years old.

Mozley joined the Marine Corps Nov. 14, 2005 and was an amphibious assault vehicle specialist with 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

He was deployed to Iraq from August 2008 to March 2009, which was his first and only deployment.

Mozley’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
