Donald W. Long, 84, of Fallbrook, Calif., died Saturday January 16, 2010 of complications due to respiratory illness. He was born in Rochelle, Ill., the fourth of five children. He married Harriette Marker in 1947 and was the father of three children.
He served 24 years in the US Marine Corps including service during WWII, where he was a part of the landing force at Iwo Jima and in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Division in Da Nang. He retired from the military in 1968 to embark on a 30+ year career with New York Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where his name was synonymous with serving others.
He was preceded in death by his son, Randall, and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Harriette; his son, Kendall (Candi), of Lakeside, Calif.; his daughter Hina (Walt), of Henderson, Nev.; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary in Fallbrook. Services will be Saturday, February 6 at 1 p.m. at the Fallbrook Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 621 S. Stage Coach Lane. Don will be laid to rest in the Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery. He was greatly loved and will be missed.
