The Lumleys went to the same high school in Iowa before 53 years of marriage

Lois met Darwyn Lumley in high school and church; they are from the same town in Iowa. This coming June, they will celebrate 53 years of marriage. Darwyn said, “I’m ready to go for another 50! It sure doesn’t seem like it’s been 50 years.”

Darwyn and Lois have been involved in the vintage automobile hobby for over 50 years and have had a variety of vehicles. Currently their sole “old car” is a 1960 Bentley long wheelbase sedan. There were only 25 made in 1960. Theirs is number five. They have been cruising in it for 26 years.

William O. Bentley created Bentley Motors, Ltd., in 1919, which was acquired by Rolls Royce in 1931 due to Bentley Motors becoming broke during the Great Depression. More recently the Bentley was sold to Volkswagen, and Rolls Royce was purchased by BMW.

According to Darwyn, “Driving the Bentley is always an experience and there have been many amusing, and some possibly dangerous, situations. Other drivers often slow down and start taking photos. Sometimes they forget about staying in their lanes.”

Lois related a story about driving around in the Rodeo Drive area of Beverly Hills, and said, “We found that tourists from Japan were using their camcorders on us. We probably disappointed them when they found that we were not TV or movie stars.”

After retiring and finding themselves frequently driving to Vista to visit and attend the events of their six grandchildren, they decided to move to the area in 1999. Although they also live in Vista, they joined the FVCC and enjoy the friendliness of people in Fallbrook during their many sojourns here.

They joined the FVCC because of Darwyn’s association with the Antique Car Association of America (ACAA), of which FVCC is a Chapter, and because the membership is friendly and welcoming to visitors and new members. They both actively support the club’s activities and Darwyn is a past editor of the newsletter. He also serves as a judge at the Annual Memorial Day FVCC car show at Potter Junior High School.

Lois retired from Director of Nursing for Brea Community Hospital, in Orange County. Darwyn was a school administrator in the Juvenile Court and Community Schools of the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

They have four daughters, two in Vista, one in Albuquerque, and the other in Berthoud, Colo. Four of the grandchildren still live in Vista.

Past president of the Society of Automotive Historians, Darwyn Lumley published an automotive history book which is very apropos for 2009, “Breaking the Banks in Motor City: The Auto Industry, the 1933 Detroit Banking Crisis, and the Start of the New Deal” (McFarland Publishers, 2009). It is available from booksellers online.

The Fallbrook Vintage Car Club is always open to guests and new members. To receive more information about the car club, send an Email to [email protected].

Monthly meetings are held at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club, 238 West Mission Road on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
