Life Coach - Wisdom from the Proverbs

“Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”

-Proverbs 17:28

Surely this proverb is true! Fake it until you make it was a motto of mine whenever I started a new job or endeavor. Part of faking it was to say less and not too much. People automatically thought I knew more than I did. That strategy helped to buy me time while I was learning the new job or situation. As a general rule, the more we learn, the more we realize how much we do not know. Continuing in the mode of keeping silent is a path of wisdom.

In this proverb, we see the words, “holds his peace, which may imply not speaking out of anger or agitation. Again, wisdom is operating when we hold our peace and give time to learn more about a situation. If we are upset about something, a little more time may reveal that we did not have a complete picture of what was going on or in fact we may have had inaccurate information and new insight may lead up to a different conclusion. When that is the case, we will be glad that we held our peace.

What is our reward when we keep silent? It is to be considered perceptive. Some synonyms for perceptive are: intelligent, discerning, understanding, keen, sharp, aware, observant, and insightful. Wow, what a great reward!

Action: Seek to ‘hold our peace.
