USMC Sgt. Myrick and family win living room makeover contest

SAN DIEGO – The Myrick family from Fallbrook, USMC Sergeant Daniel Myrick, his wife Amber, and eight-month-old son Wyatt, are getting a complete living room makeover courtesy of At Home with Laurie Ann, a Point Loma interior design store owned and operated by author and interior designer Laurie Ann McMillin Ray.

Ray announced the winner of the “Always Ready, Always Faithful, Always Courageous” contest last week. The contest invited members of the San Diego military community to submit applications for particularly deserving military families who have a living room in exceptional need of a makeover. Visitors to the Web site voted for whom they believed needed the makeover the most. The Myrick family submitted a You Tube video with their application, and won hands-down, according to Ray.

For the Myricks, the complete living room makeover couldn’t come at a better time. Sergeant Myrick, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, is busy preparing to deploy with his unit in May.

Sergeant Myrick and his wife are both California natives, with Amber from San Diego and Daniel from Fresno. Stationed in San Diego for seven years, they have had to endure many deployments and times away from one another. With a baby due in September, Amber soon will be alone again for six months to care for Wyatt and their two dogs.

“Our living space is not baby proof,” wrote Amber Myrick in her application.

“We have a coffee table and end table that are metal and slate and very dangerous for the baby as he just started crawling. We cannot afford new furniture so we will be doing without tables.”

Ray notes, “One big concern I have is not just the furniture, but the fireplace as well.”

The Myricks use the fireplace to warm the home on chilly winter nights. But the protective glass broke, presenting yet another hazard. To add to that, with paint peeling from the entertainment center and 10-year-old couches, it’s clear that Ray has her work cut out for her. Undaunted, Ray said “we are eager to show how anyone can design a wonderful living room easily and inexpensively.”

“I’m so grateful to get this support and excited to see what it will look like when we’re done,” said Amber Myrick.
