AAUW celebrates 2010 AVID graduates

FALLBROOK – The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Fallbrook chapter recently celebrated the imminent graduation of six high school Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students with a party at AAUW member Terri Keyes’ home. This year’s event was organized by Guity Balow and Katherine Gardner.

The AVID program is designed to help the students succeed in the academic and social world with a college degree in mind.

For several years, the local AAUW chapter has operated a mentoring program for the high school girls in AVID in order to help them expand their social and cultural lives by offering parties, field trips, plays, and other broadening experiences.

Surprise guest Gina Brizzi, of the Fallbrook High School Class of 2009, spoke to the gathering to tell her experiences over the past year attending the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. Dressed in her uniform, Brizzi described her daily routine and course of study at the academy which will lead to a career in the maritime industry.

The 2010 AVID program graduates include Jessica Salas, Yvette Hernandez and Carla Mercado who will attend University of California, Riverside; Lupita Guerrero, Cecilia Castros and Ana Velasquez, who plan on attending Palomar College with California State University, San Marcos in mind for the future.
