New wine and tapas bar opens in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK – A new wine and tapas bar has opened in Fallbrook’s Jackson Square on Main Avenue. The Gnarly Vine, owned by John and Lura Compoginis, features a relaxing and welcome environment to enjoy a glass of wine and one of the many delicious appetizer plates.

After months of preparation, the new establishment officially opened June 19. The Compoginis daughters, Angela and Katina helped on opening night, making it a wonderful family affair.

Lura Compoginis grew up in Fallbrook, graduating from Fallbrook High school and Palomar College. She and her future husband met in Portland, Oregon, where he was busy gaining wine bar experience managing Jazz de Opus.

The couple spent 25 years working and raising their daughters in the Sacramento area. As empty nesters, the desire to return to Fallbrook became a reality several years ago.

Lura is employed full time in the legal field, but helps out in the wine and tapas bar in the evenings. Her completed vision for the interior of the Gnarly Vine transports patrons from Fallbrook to Spain or Italy when they walk through the front doors.

At the Vine, wine is served from around the world in flights, by the glass or bottle. Selections include wines from Northern California, Oregon, Washington, France, Spain, Argentina and Australia.

Appetizer plates include remarkable cheese from Spain, an antipasto platter, hummus plate and serrano ham manchego cheese melt.

The Gnarly Vine, 119 N. Main Ave., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. Phone (760) 731-WINE (9463) for more information.
