Sheriff's Spanish Academy holds graduation

FALLBROOK – The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department held a graduation for its Spanish Academy (Academia de Alguacil), May 31 at the Fallbrook Community Center.

A 6-week program in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education – Migrant Education Program, the academy is designed as a relationship-building program to help provide equity in educating the Spanish-speaking community about law enforcement procedures and available resources in San Diego County.

The program is conducted entirely in Spanish with a curriculum based on recurring themes and needs that the Sheriff's Department sees and hears based on the experience of deputies in the communities. The academy covered a dozen public safety topics such as drugs, gangs, immigration, human trafficking, what to expect when you call 9-1-1, or if you are stopped by deputies and more.

Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez attended the graduation as well as representatives with the San Diego County Office of Education - Migrant Education Program, and the Mexican Consulate.
