  • Thanks for the recipe

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Open letter to Harriet Oppenborn: When efforts to locate you through the Fallbrook Directory and the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce failed, I decided to send you this message through the community forum. Dear Ms. Oppenborn, I wanted to publicly thank you for your generosity in sharing your award winning guacamole recipe with the Fallbrook community. Ever since it garnered first place at the 2004 Fallbrook Avocado Festival, it has been a frequent and much requested appetizer at our family gatherings. For that reason, the fair...

  • RE: The coaches

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

I am writing in response to Margot Taylor’s opinion in the June 15 paper: It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt....

  • Please bid on my pig

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

It’s Del Mar Fair time again and I, Hayley Hayward, am in the Swine group in Fallbrook 4-H. This year I plan to go to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where I will show my pig for showmanship and market. On July 3 I will auction off my Blue Butt pig (named Miss Piggy) that is over 200 pounds. I invite you to come down, if you would like, and try to win my pig in the auction. You’ll be glad you did!...

  • Quality of life is deteriorating rapidly

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like our rural nature and quality of life in Fallbrook is deteriorating rapidly? As a 26-year resident of Fallbrook and a San Diego county native, the last year or two have really seen a marked change. I have noticed a great increase in condensed infill developments, extremely marginalized steep slope lots being built on and Carmel Mountain type subdivisions being planned and permitted. The I-15 Highway 76 intersection is already a travesty and will only become more of an eyesore in the...

  • My animals will be at the fair

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

My name is Corey Clift and I am in Fallbrook 4-H. I am in the Swine and vet science projects. I have chosen to raise pigs because they are easy to train and they do well at the auction. This year at the fair I will be auctioning off my pig, Gidget. She is a York/Blue-Butt cross. At the Fallbrook Youth Fair last month, my pig took second place in the Market Class (Conformation). It was a very close competition, as the judge said he had a hard time choosing between Gidget and the pig that took first place. If you are...

  • What will Mr. Thompson do now?

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Now that the people have “spoken” and re-elected Bill Horn, what will Bruce Thompson do? After reading the numerous letters from local residents singing his praises and touting his concern for the community, can we expect him to step forward in another capacity (perhaps volunteer?) to make a positive difference? Or, was it all about the County Supervisor’s paycheck? I’m sure his time, knowledge and energy would be much appreciated by any number of local non-profit organizations that work to make Fallbrook a better place a...

  • Farm Bureau needs you

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

There is little debate that Fallbrook and farming are inherently connected. Nearly every road in our community hosts at least one nursery, grove, or a business that depends on the local farmers. Stand on any high spot in our town and a farm will be within your view. For Southern California, we should feel pretty good about that. But this is something we should not take for granted. Right now farmers are pressured by many issues including rising costs, static prices for our products, the threat of exotic diseases and insect...

  • Mason Weaver: a breath of fresh air

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Mason Weaver is a man with very clear opinions. My understanding is that simply stated he is for free enterprise, individual initiative and against welfare statism. All admirable philosophies. His statements regarding an unwillingness to tolerate opinions criticizing his beliefs are quite a different thing than the common interpretation of “being intolerant”. His ideas are bonafide and people of opposing views should be able to present reasons why his perspectives are wrong. The letter by Anna Monday (June 15) is simply a d...

  • The potential of a massive inferno

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Smoking is strictly forbidden within some perimeter of a gas station. The employees at the Exxon station at 1202 S. Main Ave don’t seem to know this. Within the past month, I have observed several different employees step out of the office, stand within 15 feet of my running gas nozzle, and smoke cigarettes. Obviously they are observing the law that prohibits smoking inside buildings of public employments, lest they endanger their paying customers by subjecting them to passive smoke. However, the potential of a massive i...

  • Farmer and Adele Craft Fair closes

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

We simply wish to thank Fallbrook and the Village News for supporting our efforts for the last fifteen years. It had become a tradition for over half of those who came annually to the Farmer and Adele Craft Fair out near the end of Willow Glen Road. The hard work was always rewarded with smiles and good conversation. The set up time with crafters, some had been with us since the beginning, became something we looked forward to each year. And then the few thousand people who came all the way out here to see what people had...

  • Re: 'Almost free speechless' & 'The Friendly Village?'

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

You know how there are those in life who get it and those who do not and may never? Anna and Chris, you both fall in the latter category....

  • No conflict in memorials

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

I was happy to see Jon Monday’s wonderful reply to Col. Raul’s negative letter. I was a navy wife during Vietnam; husband was in the River Patrol. Went to too many funerals; have been to the Wall in DC. I felt honored to help set up Arlington West and came away with the same feeling I had at the Wall. It was a beautiful but sad memorial; tears fell as I read the ages. At 11 a.m. I went over to the cemetery for the VFW memorial, which I have done for years. I see no conflict; they both honored our fallen HER...

  • Come to the fair and see my animals

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

My name is Kayla Clift and I am currently a Fallbrook 4-H member in the swine group. During Fallbrook’s annual Youth Fair in May, my lamb weighed 118 pounds and my pig weighed 207 pounds. My pig placed third for her weight in the Market Class (Conformation). I will be bringing both my lamb and my pig to the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar. My pig is a Yorkshire cross. She is very sweet and kind. I named her Coco after Coco Chanel. I named my lamb Louis after the designer Louis Vuitton. My lamb is in great shape; he i...

  • RE: 'Why don't they go back to Mexico?'

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

It doesn’t surprise me that instead of addressing the issues you attack my character when you don’t even know me. You used my words in a different context. When I wrote that it “didn’t matter whether or not the social security cards are fake or stolen,” I was referring to the money being taken out for social security and taxes. YOU said that I didn’t care. There’s money that goes to Mexico, but there’s billions of dollars going into the U.S. economy through employment, buying clothes, going out to eat, or buying other items....

  • Open letter to Francine Busby

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

As a longtime registered Republican I too am outraged by the actions of the President, his administration and the “Young Turks” who have taken over our party. Since I’m not in your congressional district, however, I could not vote for you in the recent election. I must admit, though, that I’d hoped you’d win. It was not to be. In a district that is predominantly Republican you need to attract some of them to your cause. You did not do so. However, you can do it in November – but you need to appeal to us. For example, your TV...

  • Cemetery mismanagement evident

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

It appears that the board members for the Masonic Cemetery are much more concerned with protecting their tools than they are with protecting the loved ones we have entrusted to their care. Why have there been no police reports regarding tombstones being damaged and stolen and drug items being found? How, exactly, will that be stopped when vandals still have access through the pedestrian gate? If the problems are occurring during the night, why do the driveway gates need to be locked all day Saturday and Sunday? Because the...

  • Village News wins ten journalism awards

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

At the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) San Diego Pro Chapter annual dinner and awards presentation held June 22 at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley, the Fallbrook/Bonsall Village News was presented with ten awards for outstanding journalism, photography and graphic design in the non-daily category for 2005. It was the only publication (daily or non-daily) to win awards for articles pertaining specifically to the Fallbrook/Bonsall area and the greatest number of awards won in a single year by the community...

  • Art and nature

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

FALLBROOK — At the Fallbrook Land Conservancy’s (FLC) Sixth Annual Emerald Grove Recognition Dinner in April, guests witnessed the renewal of ties between the FLC and the Fallbrook Village Association’s (FVA) Art Center. Mary Perhacs, Director of Exhibitions for the Center, pledged $1,000 to the FLC on behalf of the Art Center’s longest standing annual show, the Reflections of Nature Wildlife Art Show. “We appreciate this gift and are honored to be a part of the Wildlife Art Show again,” said Wallace Tucker, FLC Chairman. “Th...

  • Supervisors set July 19 hearing to raise street lighting assessment

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

A July 19 hearing has been set for the likely increase in the assessment for properties in Zone A of the San Diego County Street Lighting District. A June 14 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote set the hearing date and also approved the engineer’s report for the San Diego County Street Lighting District. The annual rates would be increased from $5.60 to $5.88 per equivalent dwelling unit. The San Diego County Street Lighting District was formed in September 1987. The district itself covers the entire unincorporated a...

  • Beautifying Fallbrook

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

The Fallbrook Beautification Alliance installed the second phase of the downtown “Flower Pot” project aimed at beautifying Village sidewalks. Plans are underway to extend the project to both sides of Main from Fig to Ivy. “This is a community partnership; the Alliance provides the pots, local merchants water them and volunteers from the Fallbrook Garden Club keep them clipped and happy,” said Jerri Patchett, president of the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance. Funds raised at the Alliance’s annual July 4 fundraiser will prov...

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

The Board of Directors for Fallbrook’s Angel Society met on June 22, and awarded funds totaling $18,800 to non-profit organizations that support the needs of our community. Funds were awarded to the following organizations: • BSA Troop 725 (Michael Nichols’ Eagle Scout project) for materials to construct brick paving on paths at the Palomares House. • The Reche Community Club to construct additional access for handicapped people. • Fallbrook Associated Team (FAST) for additional water sports equipment to support the aquat...

FALLBROOK — Friends of the Fallbrook Library announce a brand new look for their popular bookstore, The Bottom Shelf. The Bottom Shelf is located on the lower level of the Fallbrook Library at 124 S. Mission Road. It is staffed by over 100 volunteers. Renovations resulted in more interior space and expanded shelf capacity. The children’s book section is now located in a cozy area named “Kid’s Korner” and features additional shelf space for its young readers from kindergarten through high school. Bright new signs mark shelves...

  • Tucker performing services

    Updated Jun 29, 2006

Dr. Sy Tucker’s son and family, Robert and Kimberly Tucker and children Hailey and Cassidy, recently presented flowers to Fallbrook United Church in Dr. Tucker’s honor. Dr. Tucker sings in the Chancel Choir and teaches special classes on women and children of the Bible. She has been a member of the Bonsall School Board for 12 years. A new venture she is moving rapidly on is establishing a graduate school on the Internet. She is in the process of writing the programs for various courses. What are the qualifications of thi...
