Warrior baseball wins first three league games

Fallbrook High School’s baseball team won its first three Avocado League games of the 2010 season.

The Warriors opened league play April 14 with a 9-6 home win at San Pasqual and then played San Pasqual at the Golden Eagles’ ballpark April 16 and April 17.

Fallbrook’s 2-1 win April 16 was an eight-inning contest while the Warriors’ 5-4 win April 17 was a makeup game after the planned April 12 opener was rained out.

“We’re proud of the guys for getting a sweep of San Pasqual,” said Fallbrook coach Jesse Schuveiller.

“We’re happy with the progression that we’re making.”

Losses to Carlsbad and Rancho Bernardo to close out the North County Tournament gave Fallbrook a 5-7 record entering league play. The Warriors came from behind to win the league opener against San Pasqual.

“It was a pretty tight game,” Schuveiller said.

The Warriors trailed by a 6-5 margin entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Tyler Wedeking homered to tie the game and Connor Cox followed with a home run to give Fallbrook the lead. “Tyler’s home run and Connor’s home run back-to-back really kind of gave us the spark that we needed,” Schuveiller said.

Fallbrook scored two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Matt Jepsen pitched all eight innings for the Warriors in their April 16 victory, throwing 78 pitches and allowing only one earned run. “He pitched an amazing game,” Schuveiller said. “We were able to squeak a run in the top of the eighth inning.”

Cox also homered in the April 17 game to give Fallbrook its final - and winning - run, while Cole Chandler obtained the pitching win in relief.

Schuveiller noted that the sweep of San Pasqual involved offense, fielding, and pitching. “A little bit of everything,” he said. “All three phases were definitely doing a good job.”

Fallbrook’s first league loss took place at home April 19 against Escondido, giving the Warriors a 3-1 league record and an 8-8 overall record.
