For the first time ever since the CIF San Diego Section began holding boys volleyball championship tournaments in 1988 Fallbrook High School reached the CIF final. The Warriors followed a first-round bye in the CIF Division III playoffs with victories over San Marcos and Valhalla before taking top-seeded Classical Academy to five games in the May 18 final at St. Augustine High School. • Matilija poppy is queen of California flowers

Roger Boddaert, Special to the Village News|Updated May 24, 2018

Matilija poppy has been called the "Queen of California flowers" in the words of Mary Parsons in her book "The Wildflowers of California," 1897. It seems more appropriate for this beautiful California native in lieu of the "Fried Egg Plant," a name which I never thought this elegant and stately plant deserved. Botanically speaking, it is a Romney coulteri, and Matilija is pronounced "ma-til-li-ha." It is one of most recognized of California flowering native plants. With some...

A 5-0 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote, May 8, approved the use of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant for two chemical detox chambers which are used by firefighters who have exposed themselves to hazardous materials during their fire suppression activities. “Firefighters put their lives on the line daily to protect us and our property,” Supervisor Bil...

  • Batching doesn't deprive public of separate hearings

Joe Naiman, Village News Correspondent|Updated May 24, 2018

The Fallbrook/Bonsall Village News has recently heard from readers concerned that the County of San Diego's "batching" process for approving general plan amendments rushes projects through. We understand the concerns of our citizens, but our experience gives us confidence that each project will be considered separately. I have covered the San Diego County Board of Supervisors since early 1998 and the county's Planning Commission since December 1999. I am thus familiar with the Board of Supervisors' procedure which allows the...

  • Loss of Democracy

    Updated May 24, 2018

It is not a coincidence that at the same time Trump pulls out of the Iranian Deal he also celebrates the opening of the United States Embassy in Jerusalem. He is not interested in peace in the Middle East or anywhere for that matter. His only interest is in money and power. He does not care that Europe asked him not to pull out because it would cost them their economic business dealings with Iran, which we have none. He ignored the leaders of France, Germany and the U.K., in favor of chumming up with the enemies of Iran:...

  • Earthquake concerns for proposed high school site

    Updated May 24, 2018

The Loma Prieta earthquake was under way. The epicenter was 18 miles from the house. We had a real shaky time but suffered little damage. The house was built on good ground. In San Francisco and Oakland, 55 miles north, it was an entirely different story. The Cypress structure of the freeway collapsed, dropping the upper level on top of the cars below. The Oakland ...

  • Mystery on Olive Hill Road

    Updated May 24, 2018

Those who travel Olive Hill Road may have noticed toward the end of April, a new fence on the west side starting a little north of the Orchid Lady and continuing for about two-tenths of a mile north. A beautiful fence, I assume built to retain this very steep area which burned during the Lilac fire. Well built, it was over eight feet tall with heavy three-inch stanchions four feet on center, heavy chain like fencing and I believe all stainless steel. Now, here is the mystery part. Don't go looking for it! Seems like sometime...
