  • Marines learn the truth about driving

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

Who would have thought that watching YouTube videos, poking fun at hecklers and cracking jokes about the San Diego Chargers and Padres would keep Marines safe as they drive on San Diego’s freeways? Whether they were expected or not, those were the methods used by Eric Newbury, a California Highway Patrol officer who gave a pre-Labor Day safety brief on Sept. 3 to Marines on Camp Pendleton. For the past three years, Newbury, who served 8.5 years in the Corps, has worked hard to...

According to NCFPD Fire Marshal Sid Morel, the deadline for compliance to the weed abatement mandate, which requires the removal of combustible plant matter within the recommended 30 to 50 feet away from a home, was July 1. The abatement order comes from county...

  • Jimmy Carter, Jerry Brown: Men of vision

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

President Jimmy Carter installed 31 solar panels on the White House on June 20, 1979. At the dedication ceremony Carter predicted: “In the year 2000 this solar water heater behind me, which is being dedicated today, will still be here supplying cheap, efficient energy.” Carter was wrong: In 1986 the Ronald Reagan removed the 20 panels. But Carter was also right. The panels are still working, just not on the White House. What happened to those panels? One of them is at the Carter Library, and another just arrived in Dez...

  • Godspeed Woody

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

On August 23, my good friend Gaynor “Woody” Bean passed away. He was 94 and far from being a “mover and shaker” in the modern scheme of things, but let me tell you of the man he really was and of the debt all Americans owe him as a member of the “Great Generation.” Born in the coal country of West Virginia, he grew up as a hillbilly and suffered through the Depression. To escape poverty, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and was sent to Panama. While he was there, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and he returned to...

  • Message to Caltrans about the final link of SR76

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

Please listen to the Fallbrook and Bonsall residents who are very concerned about the impact a Northern route for SR76 will make on our community. The Southern route will enable Fallbrook/Bonsall residents to exit on Pala Road safely in both directions and will provide additional safe exit routes for more people in the event of fire evacuation. Be aware that the cost of the new highway will not be a savings if the Northern route is chosen and people are injured in attempts to exit our towns in a hurry. The shadow of...

  • I support a signal for S. Mission and Pepper Tree

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

I read with considerable interest the article regarding recommendations for a signal at the corner of South Mission and Pepper Tree. I happen to live in one of the 54 homes that Anne Burdick referred to. I have lived in my home for 16 years, and during that time I have seen a huge increase in traffic along that corridor, especially late in the afternoon and evening. Commuters are using South Mission as a route to the 15 freeway. Also, the speed of these autos is awful. I have seen many accidents and near-misses at that...

  • A thank you for cemetery clean up

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

As a Fallbrook native whose family is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, I wept tears of joy when I read about the North County Chief Petty Officers Assn (NCCPOA) work at clearing Fallbrook’s older cemetery in “Chief Petty Officers remember Sgt. Pittenger” [Village News, 9/2/10]. After many years of writing letters, making phone calls, and trying to get someone, anyone, to listen to me about the state of this historic place, it was so wonderful to know that this organization did this amazing thing on their own. It was even...

  • Remembering the bombing: the Oklahoma City National Memorial

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

In most American cities and towns there has been more remembrance of the September 2001 terrorist attacks than the April 1995 bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City. In fact, those boarding an airplane or entering a Federal administration building are now considered a reduced terror risk if they show a valid driver’s license - even though that’s exactly what Timothy McVeigh used to rent a truck and to drive it to a parking space alongside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal...

  • "Master Chef" visits Camp Pendleton

    Updated Sep 9, 2010

For twelve amateur cooks vying to be the first American Master Chef, the only thing more intimidating than Chef Gordon Ramsay breathing down their necks while they prepared a meal was staring at 400 hungry Marines and their families. Camp Pendleton’s Camp Del Mar’s beach was the location used for the filming of one of the recently aired episodes of the new TV show, “Master Chef.” The reality show is a competition that pits amateur cooks against one another for a $250,00...
