  • Confrontation at Olive Hill intersection

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

It wasn’t a confrontation of might in the Arco parking lot at 76 and Olive Hill last Saturday morning, but of determination. On one side of the lot, two North County residents representing the San Diego Minutemen and Vista Citizen’s Brigade quietly watched ACLU representatives working a crowd of Latino men on the other side. Some of the men held bright yellow signs. “We’ve been here since 6:50 a.m. today,” said Jeff Schwilk from the San Diego Minutemen. He held a camera and clutched a stack of yellow fliers. Michael S...

  • The burden of over-regulation

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

Summer’s Best Two Weeks (SB2W) is a non-profit summer camp located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Mountains for children ages 8 to 18. SB2W counselors have led campers on rafting trips for over three decades. Yet in 2001, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources forbade campers from rafting down the Lower Youghiogheny River unless led by a commercial outfitter. In the name of “public safety,” state government is forcing the summer camp to pay $30,000 to a for-profit rafting company. This mandate was imp...

  • Re: 'Crocs Rule: In honor of Steve Irwin'

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

I am so glad to see that this magnificent man will not be forgotten by all the heartbroken followers he left behind. Monica Cox I watched “The Crocodile Hunter” religiously and was extremely shocked and heartbroken by his early demise. He appeared to be a wonderful, enthusiastic outdoorsman doing nothing more than what he loved best. My heart and prayers go out to Terri and her children, as they have lost more than I could ever (and would not want to) imagine. I really and truly am so very sorry for you and your chi...

  • Nicholson deserves your vote

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

Laurel Nicholson, Democratic Candidate for the 66th Assembly District, is running as a centrist, to work with both sides of the aisle to make good things happen for the district and the state. She can work with the Democratic majority and she wants to work with her Republican colleagues. In contrast, Kevin Jeffries, her opponent, has a history of partisan efforts to obstruct or reverse solutions and contributions of the other party, such as minimum wage and environmental protection. If you like what George W. Bush and Karl...

  • RE: 'County recertifies... speed limits'

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

Let’s see some action taken by the Traffic Alliance Committee! Surveys can be taken until everyone is blue in the face. They don’t mean a thing unless something is actually done to resolve the problem in a timely manner. Done. Having lived in Fallbrook since 1989, I have seen the detrimental impact that increased traffic has had on the community. Our roads were never built to accommodate high speeds or heavy traffic. People speed, are averse to using the brake pedal and tailgate. Add to that mix our narrow winding roads and...

He was driving a 1993 White Chevy ¾-ton truck with a company logo on the side. He chased the victim south on Mission between Clemmens and Rocky Crest at high speed,...

  • Re: 'Marines serve this country so we can be free'

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

I too have a son who is a US Marine and I am very tired of ungrateful people. He has served in Iraq and we believe in their mission over there. God bless our service people. Our son told us about what goes on; we are needed there and I might add we are a Christian nation. We are supposed to help other people and we keep the fighting over there. We support our president; thank God for him! Antoinette Kubie...

  • Note to Issa and his cohorts

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

A federal judge has declared that the Bush administration’s previously secret and illegal warrantless wiretaps violate the first and fourth Amendments to the Constitution. Meanwhile, our Republican-controlled Congress has made a high priority of passing legislation that would attempt to retroactively legalize said wiretaps. I think it is generally recognized that congressional law does not trump the Constitution. If Congressman Issa and his cohorts wish to void the first and fourth Amendments, they should follow the p...

  • Sweet Leilani's getting unfair treatment

    Updated Sep 15, 2006

I would like to respond to Eilleen Delaney’s impassioned defense of the Design Review Board on August 25. It is my understanding that the Committee approved Sweet Leilani’s and I am not disputing that issue. However, I am concerned that when Sweet Leilani’s placed three tables and eight chairs outside (because it was very hot inside), the Code Enforcement Officer from the county called and said that a complaint was lodged against them and they were not able to place ANY chairs or tables outside without the commi...
