  • Re: 'FLC toughens up on unleashed dogs' [Village News, 11/11/10]

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

I walk my dog frequently at the Los Jilgueros preserve and I think I can speak on behalf of many of the dog owners who enjoy the preserve. We appreciate the use of the preserve with the understanding that we are guests of the FLC. Most of us have well behaved dogs. I am guilty in the past of letting my dog run free on the paths. I was a new dog owner and didn’t take my responsibility seriously. That has changed as I was scolded and educated on proper dog and owner behavior by other dog owners. Because we don’t want to los...

  • Re: 'Fluoridating water is toxic' [Letter, Village News, 11/18/10]

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

In reading Dr. Donald Brust’s opinion on fluoride toxicity to humans, fluorides are also toxic to plants. The Metropolitan Water District regularly maintains a fluoride level of 0.7 to 1.3 mg/l. At 1.0 mg/l, fluoride is toxic to certain species of plants, such as Dracaena, Cordyline, Chlorophyllum, etc. Many of these are used as houseplants. The fluoride causes marginal leaf necrosis. The leaf edge burn may be caused by other elements in excess such as sodium, chlorides, or high soil salinity, but fluoride adds to the p...

  • Issa, can you spare a dime?

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

On Thursday, Nov. 18, our Congressman, Darrell Issa, and his fellow Republicans, voted to reject an extension of benefits for unemployed workers, bristling over the proposal’s $12.5 billion cost. The federal government has never in history failed to extend additional unemployment benefits with the jobless rate over 7.2 percent. The current rate is 9.6 percent. The vote was 258 to 154 in favor of extending benefits, falling short of the 2/3 majority required for passage, or $12.5 billion. If it’s such an outrageous sum, why...

  • A positive response on the unleashed dog article

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

Did you negative people read the same article I did, or are you just upset with the photo? Did any of you call the Animal Control Center or Fallbrook Land Conservancy with your concerns? Probably not. Yes, the photo is an eye opener, which did draw attention. The article never said all dogs look like this. After discussing this with Ms. Verdin, it became quite clear this was done by the owner of the dog on command. Did you read the caption? Let’s all be aware of our fellow man and pets and “treat others as you would like to...

  • Teen needs new teeth

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

I volunteer as a second year Confirmation teacher at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. I recently came in contact with a young man who I had heard about a few months back from my two teenage daughters who are in high school. They both know a boy in school who had been in a terrible skateboarding accident, and had tragically lost several of his front teeth. On Nov. 17 at our youth group’s Large Group Gathering, I finally met Jesus Duran, who is still missing those teeth. The accident happened in April. His mother took him to the...

  • Will Obama continue to go left, far left, or go middle?

    Updated Dec 2, 2010

The midterms are over and the Republicans take over the House. One wonders: are they going to stick to the principles preached on the campaign trail, or will they get caught in the Washington politics and the “good ol’ boy” network? Will Obama go center, stay left, or go far left? Obama stated in the midterms that Americans are basically frightened and dumb. Pelosi thought the Tea Partiers were dumb and were Astroturf. The “dumb” voters were right on the money. If Pelosi is left in charge of the House minority, the same thin...
