Local pastors participate in Christian unity event

FALLBROOK — On January 25, a historical event for Fallbrook took place at St. Peter’s Hall. In recognition of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, St. Peter’s Council for Christian Unity, initiated years ago by Fr. Bud Kaicher, presented a panel of four local Christian pastors who were given an opportunity to share their denominations’ beliefs. Well over 200 people were on hand to hear the presentations, which were limited to ten minutes each.

“It was amazing just how much information was given in that short period of time and the audience was very attentive, even excited,” said Bob Helling, who, along with wife Rose Marie, is a member of St. Peter’s Council for Christian Unity.

The panel consisted of Pastor Mark Demel of Zion Lutheran Church, Pastor Dennis Ginoza of United Methodist Church, Pastor Gary Golike of First Baptist Church and Fr. Bud Kaicher of St. Peter’s Catholic Community. After their very educational and humorous talks, there was a refreshment break at which time questions could be submitted.

At the conclusion of the presentation, with the reciting of the Lord’s Prayer by the hand-holding audience, the panel was given a standing ovation.

“The general opinion of the audience was that we need to do this more often,” Helling said. “This was very heartening for the Council to hear as this is the very goal of the Council. The idea is for unity, not uniformity.”

“It’s kind of like how some neighborhoods get together for block parties. They all have their own homes and private lives, but they come together in unity for various events and celebrations,” he continued.

Helling said the goal of the Council is for the Christian churches of Fallbrook to come together in unity for fellowship and ministry, all for the glory and honor of God.

“We believe that this evening, with the sharing of music, information, prayer and refreshments, is a great beginning,” Helling said.
