What we really need to do in Iraq

It was recently announced in Jerusalem that the United States was offering Israel $30 billion in military aid. The article went onto add that the US was also offering the Sunni government of Saudi Arabia an increase in military aid – though it didn’t say how much.

If this was supposed to show that the US was even-handed in the matter of military aid, it failed miserably. Everyone knows that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an American puppet and is certainly no friend to the mass of the Muslim world.

What the US really needs to do is to end the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. Simultaneously, we should announce to the whole world that we are ending our one-sided support of Israel at the expense of the Palestinians and others in the Muslim world – and then do it!

You’d be surprised at how quickly the resentment toward us would evaporate – and how quickly Israel would learn to live and cooperate with their neighbors instead of bullying and terrorizing them.

Utopian? Yes! But does our current policy of cynicism promise any better, long-term results?
