Spring Fling brings families together

The families of Headquarter and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, came together to celebrate spring at Lake O’Neill, April 3.

The unit’s second annual Spring Fling was filled with lots of games and activities, such as an Easter egg hunt, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, and horseshoes.

“The intent of this event was to build camaraderie and to get Marines and their families together, outside of work, on a more personal level,” said Rebecca Gamboa, family readiness officer, H&S Battalion, MCB Camp Pendleton. “Colonel Rogers loves bringing the whole battalion together as often as possible.”

Spring Fling is only one of several events held by the unit throughout the year. Other events include monthly cookouts, and quarterly events for fall, summer, and winter.

“Events like this give me the chance to get to know everyone in the unit, and their families,” said Col. Philippe D. Rogers, commanding officer, MCB Camp Pendleton. “It’s important because it not only shows the battalion cares about its Marines but their family members as well.”

Battalion events such as Spring Fling are made possible because of the unit’s large volume of volunteers, said Rogers. The combined amount of donated time by volunteers has earned the battalion the Camp Pendleton Volunteer Unit of the Year Award.
