VISTA - A man convicted of second-degree murder for stabbing his estranged wife's boyfriend in Fallbrook was scheduled to be sentenced today in Vista.
Hector Martin Perez, 28, faces 16 years to life in prison. A jury deliberated for about two hours before convicting Perez in the April 25, 2008, death of 26-year-old Erik Ivan Aguilar.
Deputy District Attorney Katherine Flaherty said that on the night of April 25, 2008, Perez was talking with his estranged wife and Aguilar in front of her apartment at 818 E. Alvarado St. when he stabbed Aguilar with a knife.
Defense attorney Sloan Ostbye told the jury that Perez was provoked.
Ostbye said her client's wife had been talking to him about getting back together, while at the same time starting a relationship with Aguilar.
The night of the murder, Perez told his estranged wife to invite Aguilar over to talk, according to Ostbye.
