VFW Ladies Auxiliary sponsors canine companion for wounded warrior

FALLBROOK - Fallbrook Post 1924 VFW Ladies Auxiliary is now the proud sponsor of wounded warrior, Bren Denney, and his Canine Companion for Independence, Stefano. Denney has served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, doing three tours of duty.

In 2008, he suffered a 30-foot fall while on duty in Singapore and broke his back and both ankles, resulting in eventual amputation of his right foot. After rehabilitation in Singapore and San Diego, Denney still needs major physical therapy.

Stefano responds to approximately 50 commands and can assist in pulling Denney out of a sitting position, help with balance, and retrieve Denney’s prosthetic leg for him.

The ladies auxiliary worked 15 months on this project, raising $10,000 to become a sponsor, and were thrilled to finally meet Bren Denney, Stefano, and Denney’s family at a recent gathering at the Fallbrook VFW.

At the event, Denney said, “Stefano keeps me on track with my daily exercises. I am motivated to do more now that I have this wonderful dog. My family loves him, too! He brings a lot of joy and happiness to our lives.”

The VFW ladies said they are proud and honored to have assisted a wounded warrior, enabling him to gain more freedom and independence.
