  • Re: Gridlock on the 15 [Village News, 9/28/17]

    Updated Oct 5, 2017

Unfortunately, the development of almost 400 acres of residential housing at Horse Creek Ranch will only make matters worse for both the 15 and the 76. Adding lane capacity results in increased traffic volume. Peggy Brown...

  • A Thank you to the beautiful lady in Albertsons

    Updated Sep 28, 2017

I was standing in line at Albertsons at the check stand. Before me was a lady paying for her groceries. She looked at me and said, "Do you need any help?" She wanted to know if I needed any financial assistance. I declined her offer because I was able to pay for my own [groceries]. However, I walked out of the store feeling so, so happy. Dear lady, if you read this, you will never know what a wonderful experience you gave me. God bless you. You had the kindest face. This teaches all of us to pay attention to who is around...

  • Collection to help Texas town continues

    Updated Sep 28, 2017

Residents of Fallbrook are rallying in support of the little city of Rockport, Texas, in recovering from Hurricane Harvey’s visit. Over 70 percent of the city was demolished and the rest of the city is hurting. A group of people in Fallbrook has organized an effort to truck items to Rockport. Crop Production Services, at 1043 East Mission Road, has generously agreed to provide space for donated items from Oct. 2 until Nov. 2. Gift cards for Home Depot, Petco, Shell, Walmart, or Lowes can be mailed directly to the Rockport P...

  • Humanity shines through the trying darkness

    Updated Sep 28, 2017

Americans have connections they don’t realize they have. This was borne out in Houston with the appearance of a Texas flotilla composed of fellow flood victims who spent their days (and some nights) helping their neighbors and strangers to safer ground. Strangers were helping strangers. Responders, their own homes flooded, worked to exhaustion to bring people to collection points. Helicopters of all stripes were flying into wrecked neighborhoods to lift men, women, children, the injured and ill, and family pets to safety. The...

  • A few good bills

    Updated Sep 28, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) There are good bills amidst the hundreds of bills awaiting the Governor’s signature. Helping local school districts save for special projects or financial emergencies was impacted by a cap that was placed on school reserves in 2014. This year, I supported SB 751, by Senators J Hill, (D – San Mateo), and Steve Glazer (D – Orinda), simplifying restrictions and exempting many districts from the cap. I joined Assemblymember Susan Eggman (D – Stockton) as co-author of AB 1219 to support food...

  • Drivers need to slow down

    Updated Sep 24, 2017

On Sunday (Sept. 10) we had another serious accident on Live Oak Park Road due to speeding. A driver wrapped his car around a pole. The passenger went to the hospital with broken bones. The car didn't survive; half of it was scattered on the road. And last night, I clocked a vehicle going 55+ in a 35 mph zone. Have some respect for this neighborhood and your neighbors. Please slow down! Roberta Housley...

  • Residents invited to CEQA/EIR Workshop Sept. 30

    Updated Sep 24, 2017

Fallbrook and North County residents are invited to attend a one-day workshop on Sept. 30 on the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and its Environmental Impact Report (EIR) process. Hosted by respected environmental attorney Kevin Johnson, this workshop will help us all gain an understanding of the law, its purpose, power and the CEQA process for protection of the environment. Fallbrook and North County residents treasure our agricultural heritage and open space. We work hard to maintain the beauty of our area,...

  • Afternoon snack with Jim Desmond

    Updated Sep 24, 2017

Jim Desmond, current mayor of San Marcos, is running for County Supervisor to replace Bill Horn whose term has run out, as many of you already know. What you may not know is that he is a very busy guy yet he readily meets with small groups of people who want to get to know him. That alone speaks volumes to me. Only four of us showed up at the Z Cafe a few days ago after Jim had accepted an invitation from my wife, Penny, to meet with us and a few of our friends. He was personable, genuine and easy to speak with. He has a desi...

  • A huge hug to Fallbrookians who helped out

    Updated Sep 24, 2017

A big thank you to all who recently helped out the hurricane victims in Texas and Florida. With the horrific hurricanes that have brought devastating damage to the state of Texas, Florida and the Caribbean islands, Fallbrookians rolled up their sleeves and helped out tremendously and we thank you. Because of your kindness, generosity and wanting to help others you have donated enough items to fill over 145 boxes (medium and large) and they're on the way now. Items included inflatable kayak and boat, sleeping bags, canned...

  • The Legislature has adjourned

    Updated Sep 24, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD 75 (R) As the 2017 legislative session closes, I am pleased that most of my bill package received overwhelming support, and three of my bills have already been signed into law by Governor Brown. Six of my bills are on the Governor’s desk, including AB 1386, a Legislative Woman’s Caucus priority bill to raise awareness for newly diagnosed breast/ovarian cancer patients about speaking with a genetic counselor to help focus treatment options. AB 532, authorizes courts to offer wraparound men...

  • Re: The result of ending amnesty [Letter, Village News, 9/7/17]

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

I assume that the program referred to in the Letter to the Editor/Opinion section of Sept. 7 is DACA. So, it seems that ending DACA will "make Fallbrook great again" according to Mr. Weintraub? Really? Perhaps, what might make our little town great again is more residents patronizing our local businesses and participating in more community projects and events. Certainly, ending DACA is not the answer to the perceived problems of Fallbrook or any other community. The only result of ending DACA will be the disruption of lives...

  • Volunteers needed to help with hurricane relief effort

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

Caring Fallbrook residents who are truly concerned about people in Texas are invited to come to a meeting to plan the delivery of donated items to a small town that needs help after Hurricane Harvey’s visit. So far at least 120 boxes of items have been collected, sorted, and organized to be shipped soon. A needed temporary location for sorting and packaging donated items, transport financing and logistics, and volunteer labor are issues to be discussed. We are looking for good ideas, some financial assistance, and people w...

  • Bonsall Woman’s Club continues to give

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

The Bonsall Education Foundation (BEF) acts as steward of the Bonsall Schoolhouse, the charming building located on the property of the Bonsall Elementary School. Our primary benefactor, the Bonsall Woman’s Club, recently donated the generous amount of $25,500. The vast majority of the work completed so far is due to their kindness and dedication. Our plans for these monies include a new rear door and lock, cladding the concrete masonry foundation, and the planning and building of a new bell tower. This last task will r...

  • Have ‘dreamers’ help secure the border

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

Now that former President Barack Obama’s un-Constitutional Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA is coming to an end as per the campaign promise of President Donald Trump, Congress now has this hot potato and must commit to securing our national borders and defending America’s sovereignty. In an institution that is clearly lacking in any wisdom whatsoever, what we need Congress to demonstrate is some wisdom worthy of King Solomon. Perhaps the best solution would be to pass a bill that grants the so-called “dr...

  • A new initiative on drugs

    Updated Sep 15, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to join the coordinating committee of a 5-year Stanford Neurosciences Institute initiative to foster collaboration between scientists and policymakers focused on drug addiction. The Stanford initiative will be national in scope, with committee members tasked to develop plans for its launch, and to provide ongoing advice and guidance to maximize the effectiveness of the latest research on public policy. Assemblymembers Dr. Jim Wood...

  • Native American Day

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) I am pleased to be a capitol sponsor of the upcoming 50th Native American Day celebration scheduled for Sept. 22 on the south steps of the State Capitol. This year’s event will celebrate Tribal Sovereignty to recognize the authority of indigenous tribes to govern themselves within our nation’s borders. Eighteen reservations lie within San Diego County, more than any other county in the nation. Eight of those, including five gaming tribes, lie within the 75th Assembly District. As a mem...

  • The result of ending amnesty

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

A study by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s open borders organization revealed that if an Obama-created amnesty program for young illegal aliens is ended, it would open nearly 700,000 American jobs. Making Fallbrook great again. Jerry Weintraub Jr...

  • Open letter to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

I am contacting you to voice my stringent opposition to and concern regarding the implementation of Proposition 57. My concern and opposition stem from the fact that too many crimes that are in reality violent by their nature are classified by Prop 57 as "non-violent" for political reasons. Currently under California State Law, these crimes are considered "non-violent": - Human trafficking of minor for labor - Battery with serious bodily harm - Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer - Solicitation to commit murder -...

  • Volunteers needed for mentoring program

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

Fallbrook Citizens Crime Prevention Committee and its GANAS program (guide advise nurture and support) are doing some restructuring after the death of founder/president Pat Brandel, who died unexpectedly this past February. We are looking for and are in need of people like you who want to give back to our community through mentoring our own local youth. We train our mentors and they serve in teams of two on a weekly basis at our two sites. The sites are the VFW and Summer Ridge apartment complex. We would like to start in...

She is survived by her daughters, Alison Jones Sherrill, Sarah Kimberly Jones Peterson, and Valerie Jones Risenmay, their spouses, 15 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren. Hazel was born on September 2, 1921, to Leo Claire Metcalf and Emmie Estelle Barwick Metcalf in Orlando, Florida, where she grew up with her brother, Howard. Hazel was active in her...

  • No fan of candidate Desmond

    Updated Sep 1, 2017

I see that “Bulldozer Bill” Horn, our outgoing County Supervisor, has endorsed his clone, Mayor of San Marcos, Jim Desmond. I continually see it touted that San Marcos is such a “well-run” city. If you’re a greedy developer, that statement will ring true. If you’re a common citizen residing in San Marcos, well, not so much. Don’t believe me? A ride to the city of San Marcos, anytime from 6:30 a.m. to about 11 a.m., or in the afternoon along SR78 should affirm what I say. San Marcos takes the prize for ridge top leveling and...

  • Renovations are coming to the Capitol

    Updated Sep 1, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) As a member of the Joint Rules Committee, we have been tasked with directing an upgrade or replacement for the rapidly deteriorating State Capitol Building Annex. The building was designed in the late 1940s and completed in 1952 at a cost of $7.5 million. Originally intended to house a part-time Legislature, the Annex is home to the offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor, 115 of California’s 120 lawmakers, along with 1,400 executive b...

  • America should keep its promise

    Updated Sep 1, 2017

Senator Joel Anderson SD-38 (R) Since the founding of our country, those yearning to breathe free from around the globe have been willing to make tremendous sacrifices to obtain American citizenship. Some, while not yet citizens, believed so strongly in the promise of America that they volunteered to defend it as a member of our Armed Forces, and if called upon would risk their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. America should keep its promise to them. Under federal law, non-citizen U.S. residents may receive...

  • A Thank you to Fallbrook and Bonsall residents

    Updated Aug 28, 2017

The Care ‘n Share Toy Drive 2017, a project of Torrey Pines Rotary Club, is pleased to announce distribution of over 14,700 new and gently used stuffed animals as a result of our collection drive during the San Diego County Fair. A hearty thanks goes out to the staff of the many library locations for hosting collection boxes, and to the wonderful Fallbrook and Bonsall area residents who filled the boxes to the brim! Thanks too to NCL Del Sol Chapter and dedicated Bonsall residents for their help at the fair. We could not h...

  • Back in session

    Updated Aug 28, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) The Legislature is now returning to work after its summer break, with one month left before final adjournment Sept. 15. Hundreds of bills remain undecided, including seven of mine pending in the Senate. Many important issues have been decided, including passage of a state budget. Unfortunately, huge gas tax increases and attempts to alter the longstanding right of Californians to recall their elected representatives have also become law....
