  • Thank you Questers!

    Updated Aug 20, 2017

As many of you know, Bonsall Education Foundation (BEF) acts as steward of the Bonsall Schoolhouse. The Fallbrook chapter of California Questers offered to help us with an interior improvement as part of its restoration – new curtains and sash rods! We gratefully accepted their offer. During the premier historic period of the building from 1895-1919, curtains served one specific purpose – to block outside distractions. They were hung on the lower sash only. The upper sash had no curtains to allow in light. Curtains were oft...

  • Re: Gem and mineral museum is worth seeing [Village News letter, 8/10/17]

    Updated Aug 20, 2017

Thank you, Dennis Meredith, for letting everyone know about our wonderful free museum. In 2016, we had over 2,500 visitors from 30 states and 11 foreign countries. Our reputation for minerals from San Diego County is respected world-wide, and our fluorescent mineral room is a thrill for everyone. We are all volunteers and thoroughly enjoy sharing our love of rocks, minerals and fossils with our visitors. Students from the local elementary schools enjoy coming and learning about our rocks. We are located in the heart of...

  • Summer camp at CAST is a blast

    Updated Aug 20, 2017

To whomever it is that is currently reading this, I formally wish upon thou a most pleasant day. I am Smee, first mate of the Jolly Roger, the most swashbuckling of pirate ships, and lieutenant to one Captain James Hook. I am also a 13-year-old boy from London, England, who spent his summer in Fallbrook visiting his grandparents. Said grandparents, in cahoots with my mother, conspired to put me and my younger brother into a summer camp at CAST Academy, which you'll know has spent the summer performing Peter Pan. We...

  • The Legislature should join the 21st century

    Updated Aug 20, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) Processes in the State Capitol are way out of date. During the 7-8 months I spend in Sacramento annually, I use much of my time working and voting on legislation, and meeting with advocacy groups and constituents to discuss legislation. Even so, keeping up with constituent and district concerns isn’t easy when you’re over 500 miles away. Shortening the legislative calendar and using modern technology would let legislators spend more time...

  • Gem and mineral museum is worth seeing

    Updated Aug 11, 2017

As a newcomer to Fallbrook, I've been exploring its delights, and I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't gotten around to visiting the Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society Museum until recently. What a mistake! The collection is fabulous, and the folks there are friendly and knowledgeable. We took our granddaughter and she was fascinated. I urge everybody to go and enjoy this gem (literally) of Fallbrook! Dennis Meredith...

  • The positions political women hold in today’s California are still scant, but growing

    Updated Aug 11, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD - No. 75 (R) Only 26 of the California Legislature’s 120 members are women – nine Senators and 17 Assemblymembers. Women serve at all levels of leadership, including my position as Minority Floor Leader and Senator Patricia Bates, the current Senate Minority Leader. Surprisingly, no woman was elected to the state Senate until 1976, and none were elected to the Assembly until 1918, having received the right to vote in 1911. When I was ele...

  • Trump's speech was not Scout-like

    Updated Aug 5, 2017

We’re a Scouting family. My sons were Boy Scouts, my Eagle Scout grandson is at Scout camp right now. Collectively, my husband and I have 50+ years of professional and volunteer service with the BSA. We support our local troops and the local and national councils. I am invested enough to say that I am livid at what Trump said at the National Jamboree this past week. He was vulgar, political, inappropriate; not surprising. I’m disappointed that the National Council would invite him knowing that most likely this is the kin...

  • Senior computer classes need a new home

    Updated Aug 5, 2017

I had heard about the computer lessons offered at the Foundation for Senior Care on Mission Road, but had not visited their location until recently. Training is offered on popular computer programs. They are offered to seniors by very knowledgeable personnel. On Fridays, experienced techies are available to repair equipment at no charge! This valuable program will no longer be offered on Mission Road. They must find another space to house their equipment and offer classes. Our community has created unique solutions to needs...

  • Trump continues on his blundering way

    Updated Aug 5, 2017

Trump's political remarks before the Boy Scout Jamboree in West Virginia on July 24 elicited an open letter calling for the resignation of the Jamboree chairman, Scout CEO and Scouting President. Two Eagle Scouts composed the letter. Here are two excerpts: "The Scout Law states that, 'A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.' There is no person in American society today who less embodies the laws of Scouting than President Donald J. Trump, and...

  • Re: Anderson visits Fallbrook to talk about local issues [Village News, letter, 6/1/17]

    Updated Aug 5, 2017

On May 18, I co-hosted the Town Hall Coffee event with our State Senator, Joel Anderson. On June 2, The Village News posted (online) a letter by Pennie Leachman. Ms. Leachman stated that she was disappointed in the Senator's "canned answers". What we heard that night were genuine answers from a genuine man. Perhaps Ms. Leachman mistook prepared, thought-out, and consistent with "canned". Ms. Leachman states she was offended by his answer to a question by Maj. Gen. Anthony Jackson, USMC(Ret) about California policy to tax...

  • Hold on to Your Wallet

    Updated Jul 31, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) As your Assemblywoman, I oppose tax increases, which is why I voted against extending cap-and-trade, a huge regressive tax on the working men and women of this state. Though cap-and-trade fees generate billions for California’s general fund, there is little evidence of any positive environmental impact. Under the program, caps are placed on greenhouse gas emissions by industries, such as oil refineries and energy producers, which pay fees on emissions that exceed those caps. Though t...

  • A rave review for July 20 issue of Village News

    Updated Jul 31, 2017

I just got a chance to sit down and read Thursday’s (July 20) paper. I wanted to let you know that I thought it was fantastic! A lot of news to cover in town and you really covered it all! From hot button issues to feel good news to community events. Thank you for all that you do! I am grateful for the paper, all the staff that make it happen each week, and the continued commitment to the community to provide a great local paper! Lila MacDonald CEO Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce...

  • What mental health rehabilitation centers are like

    Updated Jul 31, 2017

Over the past weekend my wife and I took the opportunity (at our own expense) to visit three separate Crestwood Mental Health Rehabilitation Centers (MHRC) in Angwin, Vallejo, and San Jose, for the purpose of getting a better feel for what these facilities are like and how they manage challenges that might pique community concern. These visits each took several hours and included tours and interviews with the clients and staff, as well as discussions with local law enforcement officials. The settings in Angwin and Vallejo...

  • Where is compassion for the mentally ill?

    Updated Jul 31, 2017

I have been reading about the concern that residents have regarding Fallbrook Hospital being converted into a mental health care hospital. It seems that those opposed are trying to frighten others into thinking that this plan will result in more criminal activity because the patients that would be treated there would be dangerous. Mental health care facilities provide professional treatment with professional staff. They also monitor their clients around the clock and provide security for their clients. So how is this...

  • Voting integrity at stake

    Updated Jul 24, 2017

The Trump administration has created an Election Integrity Commission to verify or deny the allegations of millions of unlawful votes. It has requested the voter rolls from each state, district and territory. This would create a national database of voters. See any dangers in this? In addition to the undefined intended use, there is the issue of vulnerability to hacking, political abuse and cost. There may be a reason for a national roll of voters in the future, but just as now there will be a trust issue. Remember the...

  • An unfriendly bank in the friendly village

    Updated Jul 24, 2017

Sometimes you just have to say something when you see something. There are several banks in Fallbrook to choose from. Perhaps this will make that choice a little easier. Recently, I went to Pacific Western Bank near Major Market just to change a $20 bill. Simple, right? Wrong. The teller told me I had to have an account there! I raised my voice to say, "You can't change a $20 bill without having an account?" A short manager type brunette jumped up and assured me it was impossible without an account. I said, "What has our...

  • We The People

    Updated Jul 17, 2017

Why spend so much time fighting to eliminate the health care act. If you can't take the time to look at how to correct its flaws, then you're not the person who should be involved in amending it. It tells me when you spend so much time on eliminating the health care act, it only shows you're not doing it for the American people. You're doing it for your own special interest. Start caring about the millions of people who will be without, and less about your own party’s interest. Thank you, Tom Farekian...

  • Big changes ahead for taxpayers and businesses

    Updated Jul 17, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron The California State Board of Equalization is an agency familiar to our small businesses. Known as the BOE, it’s a place businesses file their quarterly sales taxes, fee and tax appeals, including fire fee and property tax appeals. The BOE handles tax fraud, taxpayer rights issues and criminal tax enforcement. Effective July 1, most BOE responsibilities, including permit, audit and collections have been transferred to the California Dept. of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA), under the G...

  • No fan of AHCA

    Updated Jul 8, 2017

The Senate version of the AHCA, legislation affecting one-sixth of our economy, was secretively crafted with no debate. That is frightening. If this bill passes, your voice as a citizen will be weakened to a devastating degree. We must not let that happen. Senator McConnell allowed pharmaceutical and insurance companies an early view of the bill. He also made sure to forcefully remove wheelchair-bound constituents from outside his offices. The story that Obamacare was “rammed through” and “just as secretive” is a success...

  • Proposed Bonsall High School in Gird Valley

    Updated Jul 8, 2017
    1

This month, BUSD accepted community comments on the proposed Bonsall High School on Gird Road just north of SR-76. As a parent of a former Bonsall student, I helped campaign for Prop BB, believing (because administrators said as much) that BUSD intended to offer a small school alternative to Mission Vista High School and Fallbrook High School's 1,500-plus students. As much as I want educational options, the entire concept of another 1,500 student high school in North County deserves extraordinary consideration to incorporate...

  • Local input on cellular antennas in jeopardy

    Updated Jul 8, 2017

The California state legislature, via SB649, is debating the prospect of removing all local input, including our citizens, Planning Groups and Board of Supervisors, from the approval process for all cellular antennas. If you have an opinion on that, you might contact your state senator or San Diego County Department of Planning Services, Deputy Director, Shelly Tregembo at [email protected]. Jim Russell Chair, FCPG...

  • Perseverance pays off in rate case ruling

    Updated Jul 8, 2017

Mark Muir, Board Chair San Diego County Water Authority When the San Diego County Water Authority filed its initial rate case lawsuit in 2010 against the Los Angeles-based Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, we knew it would be a marathon. Seven years later, we passed another important marker in the long-running litigation when a June 21 ruling by the state Court of Appeal sided with the Water Authority and the San Diego region on several significant issues. The decision includes a few key takeaways: - The...

  • Let’s all go outside and take a walk

    Updated Jul 8, 2017

The American Counseling Association Special to Village News Looked outside lately? Yes, that’s sunshine and warm weather – a perfect time to get out and get moving. Yes, we know you’ve heard it before. And yes, we know you realize you should be moving more, and you’ve meant to get started. Well, maybe these facts can help motivate you. First, let’s make it clear that being sedentary isn’t all your fault. Today’s world is full of things that make life easier and have reduced physical work. Take that job of being a homemaker....

  • California's Native Wildlife

    Updated Jul 3, 2017

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 (R) This month, I was excited to join 200 caring people from around the state to advocate for native wildlife at the Capitol for the Humane Society’s annual lobby day. At the press conference in front of the Capitol, I spoke about my bill, AB 1031, that creates a voluntary donation "check off" on state tax returns to support Native California Wildlife rehabilitation groups like Project Wildlife in San Diego County and about 70 others that rescue and provide care for injured, sick or orphaned...
