Why isn't Schwarzenegger man enough?

After his stunning defeat at the polls, Governor Schwarzenegger realized that his popularity is greatly diminished and that he needs to re-position himself toward the center if he has any hope of getting re-elected. So, how does he go about this? By dropping the old Newt Gingrich-style, neo-Conservative, business-oriented, Scrooge-like policies of last year and switching to huge public works policies that will put people to work and placate the teachers, firemen, police and so on.

Nothing wrong with the switch in policies – but where he goes completely wrong is in how he will pay for these popular programs. His plan is to float a massive bond issue, which will saddle this and future generations with paying the bill. Why can’t he “bite the bullet” and follow the old GOP principle of pay-as-you-go? Is he so scared of the negative publicity that he prefers that our grandchildren pay for this huge bond (loan) instead of being man enough to raise taxes now and balancing the books in the good old-fashioned way?
