Etiquette classes to be offered in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK – Classes in manners and etiquette will be offered on October 17 for children ages 5 to 10 and on Oct. 24 for those 11 to 14 years old, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elder House in Fallbrook.

While many might think this type of social training is something of the past, the appropriate effort of grace, etiquette and protocol can make or break professional relationships, friendships and romances.

“Civility and manners are as important today as they ever were, and we are often judged by something as simply as how we hold our fork to the strength of our handshake,” explains Jonnie Fox Flanagan, an independent etiquette consultant and owner of The Magnolia School of Etiquette.

While Flanagan admits the world has been forever changed by the technological advances of the Internet and cellular communications industry, she says, “There is an entire separate set of etiquette rules that apply to electronic communications.”

Flanagan says decades ago it wasn’t uncommon for youth to be sent to charm school, finishing school, or be required to take a manners class within their school curriculum.

“You don’t see that much anymore,” says Flanagan. Born and raised in New Orleans, she says manners are an individual’s “calling card.”

The etiquette classes include numerous aspects of social graces, communication, dining etiquette, sportsmanship, and personal development. A light lunch is included and take home study guides will be provided.

Advance registration is required. Seminars are $75 per student and deadline for enrollment is Oct. 13. To register, call the Village News at (760) 723-7319 or go to http://magnoliaetiquette.com/register/public-events.

Flanagan also offers classes to any groups with six or more participants. For more information, she can be contacted at (619) 977-9181.
