FPUD GM search fields 92 applicants; negotiations continue

With over 92 applicants vying for the position of general manager (GM) for Fallbrook Public Utility District (FPUD), the agency was unable to meet its previously stated goal of having a new GM in place by the beginning of June.

The district began its search for a new general manager when Keith Lewinger announced that he would retire July 5 after holding the position for 12 years.

“Even though we had a target date, we did not want to rush the process and wanted to be sure we got the best candidate,” said Don McDougal, board member, FPUD. “We had 92 applicants to narrow down, and had final interviews with seven.”

An offer was made to the individual the district deemed its first choice for the position; however the candidate turned down the position in order to take another position with another utility district.

“We then brought in our [remaining] top two for follow up interviews last week, and met this week to select our final candidate,” said McDougal. “We are currently in negotiations with the final candidate.”

Lewinger said he could not predict how the negotiation process will go, or how long it will take, but McDougal said he is hopeful to finalize the process soon.

“We are on track, and should have the new person on board by mid-July,” said McDougal. “This has been such a difficult task as there are so many great candidates.”

Until the new GM steps into his role, Lewinger will continue in the job.

“I will provide guidance and help as needed after that at the request of either the board or the new GM,” said Lewinger.
