Winchester man dies in Rainbow accident

RAINBOW - While the fatal crash of a 60-year-old Winchester man is still under investigation, it appears some type of medical emergency may have been the cause. The single-vehicle crash, a 2003 BMW sedan, left the driver dead near the San Diego-Riverside county line, the California Highway Patrol said today.

Witnesses told investigators that the vehicle began to drift to the right off northbound Interstate 15, hitting the bridge railing south of Rainbow Valley Boulevard at freeway speeds, CHP Officer

Jim Bettencourt said.

"The BMW ran off the roadway and landed in Rainbow Creek around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 11. The driver did not take evasive action prior to the collision,'' Bettencourt said. "At this time it appears the driver may have suffered a medical emergency.''

Bettencourt said the crash remained under investigation and it was unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
