Individuals can help cut carbon by planting a tree

FALLBROOK – Climate change, a worldwide problem, is such a big, complex problem that an individual may wonder, "Is there anything I can do to make a difference?"

A resounding "Yes!" is the answer. If every property owner could find a place to add even one tree to offset pollution through the miraculous process of photosynthesis, which gobbles up pollution every day, it would make a difference.

Trees hugely provide shade that can break up a "heat island" created by the vast amount of asphalt in and around the community, in roads, parking lots, highways, making a huge difference. Cities, private property owners and whoever owns land, can make an impact. Years of raping the land through overlogging in many countries has had devastating effects.

Save Our Forest has planted over 2,750 trees in our community in the last 27 years with publicly funded grants. Those funds can only be used to plant trees on public land such as road easements, public schools, libraries, public parks and on public properties.

Save Our Forest and Fallbrook Land Conservancy together with the Fallbrook Climate Action Team began the "Cut the Carbon, Plant a Tree" program last year during the best planting months. They are starting it again, offering trees to private property owners in Fallbrook and the surrounding areas.

For $50, homeowners will get a tree from a select list of trees that fare well in this climate, help choosing the right tree for the right place, planting site evaluation and guidelines, important information on defensible space, follow-up with SOF as needed and one year of SOF/FLC "Friends" membership (see https://www.fallbrooklandconservancy.org/save-our-forest for perks).

Join the battle to fight climate change, call the FLC office at 760-728-0889 and ask for more information.
